Considering Breeding My Budgies ... Questions

Featured Replies

Posted

Hi, I have 4 budgies, two male, two female ... they are housed together in a large cage / aviary on my back porch ... they are "paired" up as such, they each have a mate they hang out with ALL the time, which is cute :(

I would like to breed them, I don't want to be shot down for wanting to breed budgies who's background i don't know, but before I do breed them i'd like to find out as much as i can about it, what i need to feed over and above their standard seed / grit / occasional thistle diet, problems that can be encountered, etc.

My pairs are a blueish purple clearwing (i thik thats what its called) male and a grey/purple female, and a pink eyed white (recessive pied?) female and a blue and white pied male ... they are all approx 12 - 18 months old (come to think of it dad had them about 12 months before i got them) so probably closer to 18 months

What vegies / fruits do they like best? Should i give a vitamin supplement in their water or something different? They have cuttlefish and a mineral bell in the cage as it is now. Would i have to separate them? or can two (or more) nestboxes just be put high in their cage as its quite big?

any information is much appreciated :)

thanks!

No worries...no shooting here. :( Your birds are of the right age and they look in healthy condition too so thats all good. You probably dont need the grit but thats a debate where there are FOR and AGAINST so your decision to make. Getting them on a good vegie diet will help prior to breeding....finesliced chinese vegies over lettuce( lettuce is not good ), grated carrot, sweetcorn etc. And if they havent tried it before or not sure, sprinkly their bird seed over the vegies

What vegies / fruits do they like best? more vegies than fruit ( less sugars ) ...as above, chinese dark leafed green vegies .....not spinach for breeding birds as it leeches the calcium from their bodies. Corn on the cob, grated carrot, broccoli, apple etc. Should i give a vitamin supplement in their water or something different? Prior to breeding a calcium supplement in their water like Calcivet is good They have cuttlefish and a mineral bell in the cage as it is now. Would i have to separate them? or can two (or more) nestboxes just be put high in their cage as its quite big? Depends on the size of the cage or aviary. Post some piks and I can advise on that for you. It is better to separate into a breeder cage for breeding, a whole lot less hassle and easier all round for everyone. Also to breed more than one pair at the same time so you can foster eggs and or babies if the need arises.

any information is much appreciated :)
