Not Sure What To Do...

I have a problem. Noah appears to be sick, not sure what with, but she's a little fluffy and her poos are a little off colour. Today she's been separated from her family with a warm lamp shining into the cage. None of the other babies or parents appear sick in any way at all and they never have.

Problem: The only space for Noah's isolation cage is in my room, so not really isolated at all. She's near the other babies, the parents and the tiels. I'm not happy with this.

What would be most conveniant at the moment would be for the other babies and the parents to go to the aviary, away from any sick birds. That way Ozzie (who appears 100% better, pooing normal, chirpy, playful, eating, gaining weight) and Fizzy can live side by side in the place where the babies currently are and Noah can go into proper isolation in my brothers bedroom.

My concern is that the parents and babies have only been on meds for psittacosis (what Oz had) for a couple of weeks. However, they've never been in contact with Ozzie and Ozzie's never been in the same room as them. And like i said before, none have ever looked sick in any way at all.

Would it be worth cutting the medication short to make space to properly isolate Noah? I think so but wanted to see what other peoples opinions were. I'm really really uncomfortable keeping Noah in my room when she's clearly not feeling well. The thought of the others in my room (and in turn Blinkie, cause he plays with the tiels and Fizz) becoming sick is just terrible. I wouldn't be worried about Oz sharing the room with the tiels as he is clearly better and the whole lot of them are being treated with the same stuff he is anyway.

Oh no Bea. If I were you i'd call the vet. I'd be so concerned that Noah picked up the Pist. somehow. I really hope you get to the bottom of the problem soon and i will keep an eye on your posts to see how it goes.

I don't think it's psittacosis that Noah has, she doesn't seem to have the same symptoms as Ozzie did. I will call the vet though, i'm supposed to anyway to let him know how Oz is going.

so you think its possibly a reaction to the meds?

No idea what it could be to be perfectly honest. I've spoken to someone else and they told me it would be unwise to cut the meds short. I just phoned the vets and spoke to the receptionist. The avian vet is off till Monday which sucks!! I swear the receptionists there know me, i said this is Belinda, would it be possible to talk to Sandy and she was like hi Belinda, is your little bird sick again? She wasn't even the one who answered the phone 90% of the time i rang the last fortnight.

Anyway, i explained what has happened and she's told me that she'll get the other vet that saw Blinkie to call me back when he's finished with his client. I said that i'm not sure if dad'll take me back, she was very understanding. i'm hoping the vet will say Noah really needs to come in cause then i can say to dad that the vet thinks he should see Noah and that might make him listen better. Now i just gotta wait for the vet to call.

Well the vet phoned back. He said it should be alright for Ozzie to rejoin Blink and the tiels seeing as he's been isolated for 2 weeks, has had an injection and on top of that all the birds are being treated for psittacosis anyway. So, that has solved the problem of where Noah can go, he's going to have to go into Tim's room. He said that i'm doing all the right things with Noah, keeping her warm and separate. And i've just got to hope for the best for now. He did suggest that i try syringe feeding her some watery egg and biscuit to try to get some food and water into her. I tried this last night and she wasn't fussed but i'll try again. Everyone keep your fingers crossed that Noah's a fighter and pulls through.

All the best with little Noah, Bea. Have you any experience with a crop needle ? Good way to get food and meds into a bird quickly and surely.

Unfortunately i don't, i really should find someone who can teach me sometime. It would be so useful at times like this. :( I was checking on Noah in Tim's room and it would appear that she's done a black poo - that can't be good can it? :( I can't help but think of one one Gherkin and Buzz's babies who died unexpectedly at about this age...

On a happier note Oz was pretty pleased to be back in the loungeroom. He zipped straight over to his and Blinkie's cage. Blinkie quickly joined him and gave him some greasy looks - i think he was having too much fun having the big cage all to himself. But after walking in circles around Oz a few times i think he remembered that they were buddies and he started smooching up to Oz. :P First thing Oz has done, is hop into the cage and run straight to Blinkie's honey seed stick, hahaha. That's my Ozzie.

I hope Noah will get better soon :( . It sucks when parents don't want to take you to the vet - I have this problem with my husband sometimes - he thinks I take them to the vet too often :P (and soon we are moving even more far away from the vet :( )

It's good, that Ozzie feels better and is back with his friend - he must be so happy :D

Hope they all going to be okay soon Bea :)

well it seems like everything is worked out but the parents :P and there is not much I can do on that end.

Of course keep Noah nice and warm (er), keep in touch with the vet over the weekend or at least the office in case there is an ER.

I am so glad Oz is better and the rest of the birds too.

HUGS

Thinking of you Bea and all you are going through. Wish I lived closer to help in a more hands on way.......big hugs :angel1:

I believe that birds with Psit do go through a stage where their poos go black before coming good (?) when on the treatment, so I am hoping that it is a good thing. All the best with this little one, Bea.

Thats nice the reunion went well! I'm thinking of you and little Noah today, I hope it is just a reaction to the meds causing the black poo's.

I just ran around the net and did some more reading, Bea. Normal black stools means the psittavet (Or Doxy) is working, then they will go back to green/brown. If the black droppings turn soft and sloppy this could be an indication of coccidicosis, passed on from asymptomless parents. Not what you need on top of psitticosis, so I am hoping for solid black poos

Yesterday they were all kind of runny but today they're looking normal but black - i wonder if she's been drinking her medicated water. Will keep an eye on her for sure.

I'm glad they firmed up bea!

That sounds like she may be coming through it. How is she otherwise?

:P Hope Noah is doing better. :greenb:

If you like I could teach you how to dose/feed via crop needle... it is a very handy skill.

I work at The Walk in Aviary out in Gold Creek Village, we use a crop needle to worm and treat all our birds to minimise stress and ensure proper dose. You should come visit me! :P

Sounds like Noah is on the mend, which is great! Sandy is an excellent vet though, I wouldn't expect anything otherwise. :fear

Good luck with her!!

OMG!! You work there!! Talk about lucky, i LOVE that place. :D I agree, Sandy's a great vet, his days off are always the ones where i get sick birds though. :(Laughing out loud): That'd be really good to learn how to use a crop needle (though i'd be terrified that i was going to choke or kill the poor bird), i think dad wanted to go out and check the aviary out for himself sometime so, if that happens, i'll see if you're working that day. Thanks for the offer! :D

It's so hard to say how Noah is going. Sometimes she'll do 100% normal poos, sometimes she'll do normal consistancy but black poos, and sometimes runny in either the green or black variety. Sometimes i look in and she's a bit fluffy, other times she's having a ball turning somersaults in the food bowl or against the bars, and sometimes she's just sitting like normal. I've had her under a lamp for the last two days (not nights) and that seems to have perked her up a bit, so will do that again tomorrow!

I work every second weekend (not working this weekend, but the one after I will be there :))

I love my job - I was so lucky to get it! Working with the birds is amazing.

Sounds like you are doing all the right things with Noah. I would continue as you have been doing untill she is completley back to normal, and then some. It would be terrible to think she was better and then have her go backwards!

Just a quick question, off topic....

Are you still at College? Which one? I'm at Woden College, wouldn't it be weird if you went their too?!! :)

Hi there I was just reading about you r prob and was wondering why you have got your birds on psittacosis medication and that with this medication any healthy birds that dont have psittacosis will become ill that is show signs of illness , fluffed up , lifeless, and there droppings will become loose and possibly go green if this is the case and your bird was okay before the medication I would try just fresh water for two days and high energy foods , good seed and no green or soft food and see if your bird picks up if so then it will be the medication possibly makeing it sick , If the bird doesnt change in two days I have always found that any bird with off droppings , is given sulphur D at twice the dose and kept warm will generally recover.

Well I wish you luck ....
