French Molt Confusion

Featured Replies

hi guys, i'm confused!!!!!

i was given 3 young budgies that i think have had or still have, french molt. they are completely healthy, eating, drinking, singing and talking, but can't fly because they haven't got properly formed wings and tail feathers.

the problem is, i didn't know about the disease and i put them into a quarintine cage with 3 young bush budgies. i have read all about this disease and can't work out whether it is contagious or not.

does anyone have any idea? the bush budgies are due to come out of quarintine and go into my main aviary in about 2 weeks. i don't want to put anything into the aviary (30 budgies) that could possibly pass on a disease, but everything i have read is contradicting everything else? is this disease passed from bird to bird in the aviary, or is it a breeding disease?

thanks heaps

odin

French Moult is generally aggreed to be a virus. As most Viruses are contagious this will cause you problems. As you have them in the quarantine cage with the bush budgies I would say that depending on the bush budgies age, they may catch it. If you introduce the bush budgies or the new birds into the flight with the others I wouldn’t consider breeding until 2008 or at all. The new birds might grow their tails and flights but will probably be carriers. If you try to breed with them you might only spread the virus to other birds.

Some breeders will risk it and try to breed but mostly will produce runners.
