Scaley Face

Baby Oil.... But good quality. I noticed a Melinistic cock with a mild case of scaly face. He had it on his beak and feet. It had gotten under his ring and cause blood flow to the foot to be restricted. I applied Scaley Face medication from Aritopets. (spl?) and worked the ring loose on the leg. This was on Wednesday. Yesterday his foot was still swollen and I applied the medication again. It is a 4 day treatment.

Yesterday (Thursday) a top breeder came over to help me get my birds ready for this Sundays show and we discussed the birds. One of which was the Melinistic. He inspected the bird, asks what I was doing and told me to get some Baby oil. I always keep some in the aviary. He applied and massaged it in. With in a few moments the scale started to come away. Even from under the ring. We dug all the scale away with a feather quill. This morning the foot was looking great and the scale was just about gone. I gave the birds some more baby oil and massaged it in.

Apparently the oil sooths the area and loosens up the scale. It also smothers the mites so they can’t breath.

I have followed up with cleaning the cages and spraying AIL.

Daz are you using the baby oil an their feet only or can you use it an their beak too?

I always get some oily liquid from my vet (she said I can put it on the big vein under their wing, if I'm afraid to put it on their beak - it could get in their nose she said)

I've read about using baby oil, but can I use it for beak?

You can use it on their beaks, I do, but you must be careful not to get it in their nostrals.

Thanks Daz, I'll try :rip:

I'm just wondering, do you think I could use good quality olive oil too?

That’s interesting about the baby oil Daz…I think any oil would be okay Zebra, as mostly what it does is stop the mite from breathing. When I was a kid we used to use Detol antiseptic on the beak & legs. What I have used of late, even though I don’t like using too many chemicals is Ivermectin; its registered use is, as a pour on drench for sheep & goats. It’s used for air sac mites in Canaries & Gouldian finches.

I started back in budgerigars about 2 years ago & after buying what seemed like clean birds, I began to notice that many were getting the characteristic mite growth near the beak. I bought some Genesis [which contains ivermectin] it’s not cheap; the smallest size I could get was 250ml, which cost about $80. They recommend just a small drop, either like you say Zebra [i think this is the oil your vet is giving you] under the wing, or on the juggler vein, under the beak, which is how I have been applying it. Anywhere on the body where it will be quickly absorbed into the blood stream. It will kill scaly face mite, air sac mites & internal parasites. They say to be very careful, but I have had a few accidents & they got a larger dose & I saw no ill effects, so I think it’s pretty safe, best to not get too much on yourself, even thought they use it for head lice in humans in the USA. After treating all my flock, I now treat any new birds coming into my aviary. It lasts long enough, I think 21 days in the blood stream of the birds, to kill off all mites & get others that hatch from eggs in that time, I have had no further trouble. But of course for one or two birds the oil use would certainly do & is much cheaper.

I'm afraid to put it straight on the cere.

I don't know the name of the oil my vet is giving me, I'll ask her, maybe it's the same staff you have. I don't buy the whole bottle, she always gives me some in a small syringe (with no needle of course), it's easy to use it then.

I asked about olive oil before, my husband thinks olive oil could be dangerous - he said it has some acid in it, which could hurt birds. He thinks sunflower oil could be better to use. It makes sence to me - budgies can eat sunflowers, but don't eat olives

I'm just trying to find another option (cheaper maybe  ). But I guess I would have to put the normal oil straight on their cere :ausb:

I have Olive Oil with a few drops of Detol in it for other sores. It sooths as well. Many breeders use it but for some reason Baby oil seems to work better with Scaley Face.
