Hi I’m new to this group, this is my history…My Grandparents gave me a canary when I was 6, I used to feed it & wait till my Mum put the cage back on the wall [too high for me] one day a cat got it…sob…the next year, on my 7 birthday my Grandparents gave me 4 budgerigars in a cage. I bred from these & built further aviaries when I was old enough. In my teens I use to show budgies also. Some time in my 20’s I sold my birds, before I left my parents house.

I have kept some birds most of my life & about 12 years ago went into birds again, I bought a couple of canaries & the rot continued from then. In the last 12 years I kept mostly canaries some years I bred about 200, red factors, glosters & fife. I also bred Quarrions [cockatiels, weiros] finches, doves, quails & African lovebirds. I went overseas 3 years ago & had to get rid of most of my birds, a friend kept some Canaries, Quarrions & Blue Fisher’s lovebirds for me.

On my return I started to buy budgerigars again. I love Opalines, Cinnamon wings, normal & opaline. I had never kept Violets & I don’t think there were Spangles when I was young, but I have become very interested in them. I bought 4 violets, but sadly I think they are quite old, I have had trouble breeding them, does anyone know anything about aphrodisiacs for old budgies? I’m very interested in genetics & breeding, I’m looking forward to sharing things with you guys…regards…Norm.

Hi Norm, and welcome! It sounds like you have had birds for a very long time. They really do grow on you and become a part of you. I'm sure getting back into keeping budgies will be very rewarding for you. I look forward to hearing more about your birds and maybe seeing a few pictures too. :)

Hi Norm, thanks for sharing your story. I look forward to hearing about your the bird you have now.

I know a member here (daz) has an older male that after a few tries was able to fill eggs when he was put on sparks. (I think that was what was used)

Thanks for the welcome guys & that advice about sparks, I hadn't heard of that, puts some spark into them eh? I have one nice normal violet cock, that I bought, from a pet shop, I knew it looked quite old, but took the chance, thought if only I could get one youngun out of it would be okay. But I'm afraid it just sits in the aviary like a bundle of feathers, with no interest in anything, but maybe if I put it with some sexy young thing in a breeding cabinet it might come good (Laughing out loud).
