What Colour Is My Bird.

Hi I’m a new member; I will post my introduction when I work out how the system works. My first post so I hope it works. I have just bred this young Budgie, I’m new to spangles, which I like, its father was a dark green spangle/opaline/red eye…mother light green opaline/blue. From my knowledge of genetics I’m calling this young bird a…Dark green [or olive] opaline spangle. Please give your opinion of whether I’m right or your suggestion. I was very impressed by this colour, it looked to me in the aviary that it had no black, just green & yellow, but from the photo I see it has the fine pencilling of the spangle…I hope I can breed from this bird later to get a bird in the violet colour as I think it would be great…Norm.

Now to see if I can get the picture to work.

Welcome to the site Norm.

Your bird is stunning I want to steal him (or her?) ;)

To the genetic side of things - if mum is a light green then this one can't be olive since you need two dark factors for that colour (light greens have none) Is he the same shade of green to the dad? Can we get pictures of both the parents? I'm interested in the dad with the red eyes and spangle/opaline markings. The baby is a opaline spangle as you thought.

Beautiful bird! I second that. :)

Are those really blue feathers that I see on the tail and around the legs? There seems to be a smattering of it through the wings and below the chin too...Or just my monitor?

I'd love to see pictures of the parents also, they sound lovely.

Welcome!

Thanks for your comments Nerwen & confirmation of the colour. The male is pretty much the same green as the young one, as you say I guess he's a dark green spangle...I can get a photo of him, but the hen is on eggs again. He is only a normal dark green spangle...the colours after the / I meant he is split for opaline & red eye, as he produced this & other opalines & also an albion & lutino in his young. I bought him from a pet shop so don't know anything other about him, only from his breeding results.

Further to my first post...here are some pictures of the rest of his family...

His father...

His other sister, I think the same colour...a nice bird, but I like the stronger green markings on the bird I posted this morning.

Another sister...a very dark green Opaline with strong black wing markings.

The same pair bred two light green normals & a cock spangle the same colour as the father but with darker wind marking & it hasn't even molted out yet...Norm.

Thanks Rainbow...yes I noticed that blue near the tail, I have notice since I started taking photos to submit

that I see more colour in my birds, than I have noticed while they are in the aviary. The old eyes might be going on me (Laughing out loud).

I'm wondering if your male is a violet-green. Goldenface is also possible, but since he was paired with a green known to be split for blue then more blue or yelowface babies should have turned up.

Violet-green and Olives are hard to tell apart since the colouring end up almost the same. The reason it has crossed my mind is the blue showing around the legs. And seeing the dark sister with a lot of blue showing around the leg and vent area.

Thanks for the pictures! I'm thinking the father is blue and not green....from mid-chest down he looks like his base color is blue to me. But then again, my eyes are not as good as they used to be, that's for certain!

1st sister picture looks green, and 2nd sister picture looks blue. Are you sure father is a green bird? As Nerwen says, a few more blue would have been expected in the nest, but then again percentages are based on the breeding life of the birds and not necessarily on one clutch. But if they are the color of the father you posted, they could be blues and not greens like you thought. By chance, is he easily handled? If so, I'd see what colors the feathers are closeup on the rump and under the wings....

....or you could always breed to a blue hen and see what you end up with......;)

Thanks for that idea about the cock being blue series...Rainbow & Nerwen. My eyes aren't what the used to be also, in the aviary these birds have just looked totally green to me, but viewing the photos, you can see the blue content much better. I had thought, because of being so dark green that I would ceretainly use some of these birds, in my efforts to breed some violets, by introducing them to blue series birds.
