Hi, I have just gone out to my aviary to feed my budgies thier dinner and noticed a female on the floor of the aviary, she doesnt seem injured from what i can see but is having trouble flying high. she can flap her wings but just can quite make it to the top perch where the other budgies are.

She looks like she is ready for breeding so im guessing maybe that she is pregnant??

There are the same 6 breeding boxes in there as my dad had before, I havent changed them or taken any out or disrupted them in any way (that i know of) when I checked on them yesterday they were all fine and no problems.

I dont know of an avian vet up here on the central coast as we are very new to the area.

I have managed to take her out of the aviary and have her in a nice warm box to keep her feeling secure until i can work out what to do next.

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated, I get very emotional when one of my animals is hurt or injured and just want her to be okay :P

She is a large bird? Was her flight wobbly or unbalanced at all?

I think you did the right thing, if you have a small travel or hospital cage she can be in that for a while so you can watch her. If you think she has an egg she might have a swollen vent area and her poops will be large and slightly runny. Some even have a visible bump between their legs when forming an egg.

A heat lamp (bed or table light work) on the cage will help her stay comfortable if she is sick. And covering the side of the cage helps too.

thank you for your quick and speedy reply, yes her flight was a little wobbly and yes she is large and yes poop is runny. i have put her into a small cage with a breeding box and some fresh food and water and covered her up. i will ckeck on her every few hours and hope she pulls through. will check in again soon if anything changes and thanks again

See if you can get a hold of some Calcivet from a bird supply or pet store. What you are doing so far is exactly right as Nerwen has advised. If she is eggbound she needs warmth and some calcivet probably. Some birds get eggbound when young with forming eggs and some try and pass soft shelled eggs due to lack of calcium. Either way, if you can get some Calcivet and put in her drinking water and a drop or two in her beak that will help tremendously. I swear by the stuff, as it has brought females back from the brink, many times when in trouble with making and laying of eggs. :P

sounds like she could be over weight, or is there is no egg inside her cloaca then possibley worms, have you wormed your birds recently??

I set my alarm for 12:00pm last night to check on her but it wasnt good, she didnt make it through the night

:D im trying to hold back the tears as i type this. I am really at a loss for what may have happened and am worried that something might happen to the rest of my flock. I have checked their water this morning as i do every morning and i did notice what looks to be long poos rather than the normal small round drops like poops. Would this be worms?

No i have not wormed them recently as I have only recently taken them on from my dad when he passed.

I will buy some worming stuff and put it in their water? how often should I do this?

This is very upsetting as i have never lost an animal before

I was going to suggest you worm the birds once they settled in. Yes...it could have been worms going from what you have said. I had the same with some birds I bought in and they are fine now after worming. You get some worming solution and put it in their water and give them over about 5 days or so, but follow directions on the bottle. Remove all other sources of water while they are on meds ( no vegies ).

During summer we worm every month and during the rest of the year every 3 months. If the birds were on a dirt floor aviary before, it is more important that they are wormed regularly.

I am sorry you have lost this budgie :( but you did your best with care and attention and what you knew at the time. :angel1:

Yes i will do that with the worming solution. Thanks again

Sorry to hear that the little one didn't make it. It is sad losing them. You have done all you could for her at this time and are learning so as to help the others now.

Try and hunt out an avian vet as well. With a cage full of birds you are going to need one for big and small issues.

yes I am in the process now of trying to find a good one, are there ways to tell good from bad?

I have two little doggies and have had to take them to the vet a couple of times and surprisingly I have seen good vets and not so good vets. Just happy I found a good one close to home ;)

You need to find a specialist bird vet ( avian vet ) not just an ordinary vet. Bird or budgerigar clubs in your area might be able to recommend a good one. Members of bird clubs have been through all the vets and usually know the best ones to see. Cheers karen
