Posted March 12, 200718 yr Hi Peter and myself live in the far north tropics and today Peter was diognised with Pneumonia. He sort of had a breathing attack and myself being myself I panicked and raced him to the Vet. Lucky for Peter I did as the Vet told me he had Pneumonia. The vet gave me tricon to put into his water and changed his diet. The only problem is is that Peter is very fussy and will only eat the seed treats. I have been giving him brocolie and grapes but he will not eat these things. Does anybody have any ideas on how to get Peter to eat his vegeables. I have also read on the net that budgies that have Pneumonia that you must keep them warm, but as I live in the tropics so its hot everyday. I do not have my aircon going but I have fans going 24 7. I have had Peter for 2 years and he was fully grown when I bought him. I dont want to lose him due my negeliance so any Ideas on how to get him through all this is greatly appricated. Thanking you for your help Peter and Rybinna
March 12, 200718 yr Nice to meet you and sorry that Peter is under the weather. The most important thing you have done is that you have already taken Peter to the vet, their little respiratory systems are so very delicate. You can get some advice on eating vegetables under the food and nutrition topic. Sounds like keeping him warm is not a problem. Best wishes to Peter for a speedy recovery! :ygbudgie:
March 12, 200718 yr I hope your little guy gets well soon. Seems like it isn't a good idea to change his diet while he is battling something like pneumonia. I would gradually wean him off those things once he is feeling better. You can try introducing the extras now but keep what he normally eats available too. Then when he is well get rid of the seed treats.
March 12, 200718 yr I agree with Shawna I would get him well first and worry about veggies later you want to make sure he is not stressed more. As for keeping the draft of the fan off of him until he is well I would put a sheet around 3 sides of his cage to keep him nice and toasty with no draft
March 14, 200718 yr Author I agree with Shawna I would get him well first and worry about veggies later you want to make sure he is not stressed more. As for keeping the draft of the fan off of him until he is well I would put a sheet around 3 sides of his cage to keep him nice and toasty with no draft Thank you all for your help. He seems to be a little bit better today. Right know he is doing his normal thing of having a cat nap when I get home, but he is rather cheecky, he pretends his sleeping but he starts talking, if you walk past him and make a noice, he opens one eye and glares a you for making a noise.(Laughing out loud). Once again thank you all for you help Peter and Rybinna
March 15, 200718 yr Hello and welcome! I'm sorry Peter has pneumonia. I hope the meds take effect quickly for both of your sakes as I know how distressed I get if there is something wrong with one of my birds. As far as getting him to eat better, that could be tough. In the wild, budgies are probably opportunistic feeders, that is they will eat what they find that day. Unfortunately, in some cases such as this it can be bad that our birds do not have to fend for themselves. He is used to a seed treat diet, and will probably stubbornly refuse anything he doesn't recognize as food. That is your problem now, he doesn't recognize veggies and such as food. Changing a birds diet is difficult, as you have to convince them what you are giving them is something they want.....and what Peter wants is seed treats! I would medicate Peter as your vet prescribed, but also whenever you can, eat in front of Peter. Pretend that brocolli is the best thing you have EVER tasted in your life. Offer it to him with your hand, let him see it, then take it away and eat it yourself. It may sound silly, but it might be just enough to entice him to taste a little bit the next time you offer it to him! Make sure it is a small piece, (smaller than his head, definitely!) and if he won't eat it from your hand, place it on a clip to his cage near a favorite perch. You could also try parsley or any of the dark lettuces (red leaf lettuce or Kale) and clip these up too. He might decide to try to take a bath on the lettuces, so make sure they are very damp and clipped securely! Eventually if you offer new things daily he will become brave enough to taste. You can also try clipping baby carrots to the cage, or use a peeler and weave strips of a normal sized carrot through the cage bars near his favorite perch. It may seem like you are wasting food initially, but perserverance is key here. Good luck! Keep us posted on Peter's progress! Get well soon Peter!!
March 15, 200718 yr I hope Peter is feeling better :hap: I am so happy you are taking such good care of him. I have a very stubborn budgie who would not touch his vegies for the world, so I cooked a little extra one night and blended it all together really mushy - nothing chunky. Then I put a teaspoon in a small bowl and sprinkled seed over the top. As I went on I put less and less seed on and it was still eaten, so now I only have to sprinkle a tiny bit on just to entice them to it (they wont touch it if there is no seed on it at all) All the vegies are steamed so they don't lose a lot of their nutrients, and you can put in whatever you like What is leftover of the mash I put into ice cube trays and freeze it, so then I just have to pop out one block and defrost it. Make sure you have lots and lots of patience as budgies like to see you waste food Good luck and I hope Peter gets better really really soon.
March 19, 200718 yr Author Hi Peter is going strong. I think one of the reasons Peter got so sick was due to being alone. A couple of months ago I moved and I had to go away to a meeting. In that time he stayed at my parents. Well they also have a budgie and were side by side in their own cages and were great friends. Ever since I bought Peter home he basically started losing weight. I have taken him to the vet quite a few times since I bought him home as I was getting worried. Lucky I did. Well I think I've come to the conclusion and decion that I am going to buy Peter a friend once he is better. My question is should I get a female or male. I do not want to breed though. I will be buying a bigger cage, but how do I go about introducing them. Will Peter get jealous and how do I go about it all. I think Peter having a friend will keep him company while I am at work. Well thank you all for your concern, Peter seems to be back to himself. I've started giving him vegetables. Thank you all Peter and Rybinna
March 19, 200718 yr :offtopic: So glad that Peter has recovered. Sounds like he might like a buddy if you are away a lot. There are many posts on this site about getting another budgie, have a good read and enjoy! :book:
March 22, 200718 yr Author Hi All, Well Peter know has a friend. His name is Gav. Gav is still a baby, with a little bit of blue. They are in seperate cages as recommended and Peter is still getting his meds. I also bought Peter a new cage and he loves it. It has a swing in it and just thinks its great. I cleaned out his old cage in hot water and I have Gav in it. Gav is very checky and has been climbing all over his cage trying to get out. I have tied all the little doors on his cages shut. Peter is doing extremlly well. The only problem I had was when I put him in his new cage he found his wings and had a good fly around. Well this upset one of his feathers and he tried to pull it out and it bled a little bit. Well thank you all Peter, Gav, and Rybinna
March 22, 200718 yr I am sure Peter will be very pleased with his friend after quarentine is over and I am very glad he is doing so well.
March 23, 200718 yr  Okay, now that Peter has recovered , you can stop posting here and start a new one under "My Flock", where you can introduce Peter and Gav and update everybody. Even better, if you can take pictures (and there are wonderful topics here about how to do it and size requirements) and you could put it under "Budgie Pictures". Glad that Peter is well again.
