Regarding the pop out section of the avairy... what is the point behind it? Is there a certain reason for having it or is it just 'cause it looks good?!?

Kaz and Ken,

I am very sorry to hear of your loss. My thoughts and prayers will be with you in the difficult days and months ahead. What I learned from losing my own father-in-law a few years back, don't be afraid to talk and laugh about the good times, a lot, when you can.

There's been a lot said in budgie breeding circles about the benefits of both sunshine and rain for a budgies health. Where we used to say open roofs were a danger due to wild bird droppings, now its better to give the birds sunshsine and rain. If the open section is suspended anything a wild bird will drop more than likely goes straight through.

it is getting there.

I look forward to seeing how this turns out. A great concept. Will much wind whip through there? can you stop it?

Shouldnt do....the fences are high meaning shelter. Windows can be shut to redirect airflow. And later I will fit shutter doors so the end isnt open to them all night in a storm.

The steel framework for the popout suspended section is all done now. Its ready to wire up.

Not too much to do :P

1. Finish end cladding colourbond under popout section.

2, finish hatchdoor to external fenceline from aviary. Hinges and latches to do,

3. Wire mesh sliding glass windows.

4, fill corrugated bumps with cement between slab and colourbond.

5. Finish fitting perching racks.

6. Add front to aviary including large sliding window.

7. scrub down wire with vinegar.

8. scrub and scrape and disinfect concrete floor and walls.

I am trying to do some of the popout mesh today but a dud screwdriver bit is giving me grief and also it is raining. I am wet but I have done two sections of the floor of the popout anyway. Have to go do some funeral arrangements business now. Will try and do more later.

Did some more on the aviary today amidst other things.

Here is the perching setup......2 m wide. Designed on hinges at the top and locking pins at the bottom, so it can be dropped down against the wall for cleaning and repairs. Also, so that, under the perches can be cleaned without ducking under the perches :(

What a good design! Tony has to duck for ours :(

Looking good, Kaz!

Don't think I have ever been able to see your neighbour's roofs.. there was always a big aviary and birdrooms etc in front. It is making me reconsider, for the zillionth time, setting up something better over here as I still have no idea when I will be moving (the faster than expecting financial recovery is helping though).

I did drop down's in my aviary too, Renee, very handy when I want to boot birds out of the small side of my aviary to set up breeding boxes in it instead!.

*hugz* Kaz
