April 19, 200817 yr Author Might be worth a call. Kaz, take your pencil and a large sketch pad with you to the nationals, we'll talk. I might have to "kidnap" you just before you catch the plane home
May 7, 200817 yr Author It seems the new birdroom will happen AFTER the nationals due to a delay over supply of a window. Disappointing but has to be that way now. I ended up with a decent price by choosing a style of workshop on display ...but the dealer, gave me the added height of the garage model for very little extra. Wall height is 8 ft. So, I got away with some mods for the same price and anything else I can do after. Original quoted price was nearly $10,000 which is ridiculous ...ended up being just over $3000....not counting flights which come after the birdroom. Here is how it will be so far by the new diagram I have drawn up. I have had fitted double doors to the birdroom for a couple of reasons...to open wide for access and moving things in and out. And a friend in a wheelchair can get herself in where she couldn't before. I like the idea of fitting hinged meshed doors inside as well....so I can open the area right up and just have the mesh doors closed while I am inside...for ventilation, cleaning, release of hot air etc etc. AND letting light in while in there. I can have only one door open or both. Will most likely use the system with the box tube and connectors to make those up. At the far right is the entry to the flights outside the actual birdroom...three flights of 4m by 2m. The birdroom I am having made was fitted with a roller door in the display model at the far right. I have retained the large opening for the roller door but no roller door, and intend to make two doors from the birdroom into the first two flights. As the doors will end up fairly wide I will do the door in folding style ( hinged ) with locking pins. Hoping to run drainage gutters between birdroom and flights for hosing down and cleaning. I will do a lower door of approx 20 inches height ( also folding ) so it can have sheetmetal on it for the lower section, and it too will fold back and out of the way for mopping, hosing down in the birdroom and water can drain off into the gutters just inside the flights ( gutters will need a good thinking through to be just right materials ). The upper section of the doors into the flights will be folding ones also, so they can fold back out of the way when needed and also so that I only have to use half for access as needed too. Locking pins ( slide bolts ) to secure. Either side of the large door opening into the flights is a wasted space so I decided to put some holding cages in those corners with a hatch that I can put birds through from the aviary as I catch them up. Once back inside I will do whatever has to be done with those birds. One largish window on the front of the birdroom comes with the deal. I will also make a screen for it so it can be opened for ventilation. I have no windows that will be on the back wall, so I will have to modify that by having some high ventilation windows up there for crossflow breezes. Yet to work out what I want there but I have colleagues in the "trade" I can swap labour with. Just inside the first door to the very left is the plumbing...taps and sink. I have a laundry sink to fit into the benchtop there or a laundry sink cupboard ( which ever works best as I have both types already ) ....LUCKILY our plumbing already exists in that exact spot ...it was our garden tap and also we have the drain there for the soakwell. I like the idea of being able to wash up all the bird dishes right there and not have to take them into the house. Along that wall will be a benchtop section where I can have a kettle, the magnifying lamp I have for checking birds and rings, my laptop, my microscope, my medicine chest on the wall...and further along the show cage training setup on the wall as well. Cupboards etc under bench. The back wall will be my main melamine cages...the ones I have made in sets of three with dividers.....two sets along the back wall ( that's 6 wide by 4 high =24 cages ). The cages from the front wall into the centre of the room will be my wire cages in melamine units.....those I made are on wheels so I can move as necessary for different configuration or move to clean. Those units are vertical and three cages high. I have one skylight section in the roof, but will organise a shadecloth just for the skylight for the hot days. I will make up a full shade sail over the roof for summer as well. So, once the shed is UP, we will tile the floor and start fitting it out. And maybe change things along the way ...as you do, and as needs be. Added diagram...... http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r145/ka...es/birdroom.jpg Edited May 7, 200817 yr by KAZ

May 7, 200817 yr Author looking really good kaz. can't wait to see the finished product... I cant wait either. BUT there may be a delay or two, as my youngest daughter is having spinal fusion on the 20th and I am away on the 23rd to the 26th. When I return my daughter will be staying with me for her recovery for a few weeks. I will need to be two people to get everything covered.
May 7, 200817 yr WOW!!! Makes my setup seem tiny! . I'm so jelous! Your description nearly lost me but it all made sense with the diagram. It looks fantastic and I can't wait untill it takes shape. I also hope things go well with your daughter. Big hugs to her and you too. Maesie xoxo

Maesie xoxo Well, its kind of bigger and more streamlined than what I have right now, and I hope easier to maintain and clean...and mouseproof And my daughter is finally realising she has to give in and let people look after her for awhile.
May 7, 200817 yr it looks really great Kaz and i hope things go well for your daughter and the spinal fusion will help relieve her back pain.
May 8, 200817 yr I cant wait either. BUT there may be a delay or two, as my youngest daughter is having spinal fusion on the 20th and I am away on the 23rd to the 26th. Will send prayers that all goes well with your daughter's surgery Kaz. When I return my daughter will be staying with me for her recovery for a few weeks. I will need to be two people to get everything covered. Ah! That's what Mum's are!!...more often than not, more than 2 people and covering a multitude of things. Don't forget to take it easy sometimes and always remember to breathe! :hap: The aviary plans look great - big enough that if you have an influx of guests they would always be able to bunk out with the birds! :hap: Cheers!
