I have an orphaned ten day old budgie. Does he still need feeding every 2 hours or now that he's a little older.

How long do I leave between feeds, day and night ?

If anyone can help with this query I would be most greatfull.

Dawn... :D

Hi Dawnykins, and welcome to the forum. How did you end up with an orphan? :( Poor thing, it's wonderful that you are able to take over feeding and care duties.

I'm not sure about the schedule, as baby birds are fed by their parents on demand. The concept of a schedule is more for your convenience, I think. If you are feeding every two hours, does the crop empty completely between feedings? Or does s/he not seem quite as interested in food, or can you still see food in the crop? You need to let the crop empty as completely as possible, but if the baby is hungry before then, s/he will let you know. It would be a good idea to weigh her daily, to make sure she is gaining weight steadily.

I was handrearing a newly hatched chick for a few days and it took approx 3hrs for it's crop to empty. I would say at 10 days you could easily leave 3-4 hours between feeds and just have one feed in the middle of the night.

:( Welcome dawnykins and good luck with your baby, let us know how it goes. :ygbudgie:
one feed in the middle of the night.

I have personally never found a night feed necessary - I don't believe the parents feed at night either? My handraised babies never begged at night ...

At 10 days i would feed every 3 hours, so:

6am 9am 12pm 3pm 6pm 9pm and a top up right before you go to bed if your up after 9. :(
