Breeding For Size?

Featured Replies

Okay, I still haven't found a mate for Rocky, so I am keeping my options open, Rocky is a big boy, not sure what he weighs but he's structurally bigger than my Dom. pied cock, I've been considering getting a pet quality english budgie hen for him.

So.. considering he's not a petite boy, would I run into problem with an english hen setting to tightly on the chicks and crushing them?

You might have to explain this one a bit better for me. Are you thinking of a smaller show bird?

If you are worried about a larger bird siting too tight. Put a marble or porcelin egg in the nest. It will support the hen so she doesn't sit too tight.

I dont breed ofr show I was thinking more along the lines of a medium sized bird, somewhere between the american(as we call them here) budgie and the english budgie, I dont have show quality birds, and rockys mutation would probly be seen as a fault anyway.

I would seek out a show breeder and buy one of his birds that isn't quite the size for show. Try some bird clubs or show breeding clubs in your area. Show breeders "cull" (sell off ) there undersized birds. The bonus is, they have a record of their history ...parentage, grandparents etc.
