Posted March 5, 200718 yr Hey guys I have a hen that is laying eggs every second day but no sooner they are layed she has eaten them. I have cuttle fish bone, fruit and veg and the best quality bird seed i can get, am i doing something wrong? Is it normal for her to present to her male after every egg? I mean that she will lay her egg and about an hour later will want to mate again. The eggs look to be perfect no cracks or anything and a really nice white colour. This is my first sucessful mate with eggs layed so i am really not sure what to do can anyone help me. Thankyou Ros this is her the yellow one at the back http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q55/tkj_03/budgies013.jpg Edited March 5, 200718 yr by ram2006
March 6, 200718 yr In my experience an egg eating hen continues to do this with each clutch. I don't think you are doing anything wrong. You have an egg eating hen. If I have a hen like this, I don't keep her for breeding anymore. They will do it again and again and again. I would retire this hen from breeding if I was you. And YES, it is normal for mating to continue between eggs being laid. :nest:
March 6, 200718 yr Too bad as she is just gorgeous! I think Bubbles' advice to retire is probably the best.
March 6, 200718 yr There is a few things you can do to help stop this. Put a plastic egg in with the hen and she will hopeful wear herself out trying to eat it. The other thing you can do is to put a false bottom in the nest box. Here is one I use. The hen lays the egg and it fall through the hole on to sawdust. You remove and foster to another pair. Now there's an idea I must admit I was put off by a consistant egg eater or two, one of whom ate her nearly formed chicks in the process. ( A horrifying sight to see !! ) She wasn't cured of the habit and I don't have her any longer
March 6, 200718 yr Thanks Rob. But most of my knowledge now comes from guys like you. Listening to ideas at Club Meetings. Going to Shows, Stewarding and sitting talking to people like Henry George, Dave Ganzer, John MacAllister. those that are experienced in the fancy. Buying books and being on forums with those that talk basic facts on Breeding Budgies. These arn't my ideas but those from people that have been there and done it and found it works. March 6, 200718 yr Brilliant idea! I guess this would be particularly useful for show breeding if you had a great hen.
