Pickle And Baby Laid Eggs!

Featured Replies

Okay so I got to see my birds one day and I see my absolute favorite bird laying on the bottom of the cage. So what's my natural reaction? "OHHH NOO! SHE"S DYING!!" Then she gets up and I see a cute little egg. I'm Like "OHHHH An egg!" :nest:

Okay so anyways they laid eggs. They had ten total and so far one HATCHED! He was quite large when he hatched so I had to help him get out of the egg and he is the sweetest baby I have had. He isn't to bright because in the egg he was twisted so he couldn't turm to get out. I think he got it from his mother who got stuck inbetween the water bowl and the side of the cage and when we got her out couldn't walk from what I think was probably a massive headache.

Sooo... What color will he be most likely? Oh and there's a chance for 3 more!! Now on to the PICTURES!

OH MY GOSH SO CUTE........it looks very fat,and what cute little bum fluff on it already. What about Gherkin(baby pickle) for a name.

Great. Baby does look big and chubby.

Do you have a nestbox for her or did she just lay on the bottom of the cage. Is she in with all those other budgies? I'd worry about that.

Good luck!

:nest: Yikes, could this be a similar situation to mine or did you have a nestbox? If not and they are on the floor of the cage, you will have to provide a container to prevent splay leg as they need something to cling to and work their muscles with. My retired budgie breeder suggested a plant pot bottom with that shelf paper/liner stuff with grooves that can be rewashed. I cut out several of them and replaced/washed them daily. Good Luck to you and your birds, keep us updated! :greenb:

I dont have a nesting box but there is plenty of bedding and he can walk normal so he's fine, thanks for the concern though :) Yes they are in with the others but the mother taught them a lesson when they tried to mess with her eggs, no blood just a lot of squabling. They dont even go on the perch near her now. Ill keep you updated. Anyone know any possible mutations?

:P I know Mama is being very vigilant but I am concerned that the babe is in with all the other budgies. Last year in a pet shop, I alerted the staff to baby finches being hauled out of the nest and killed in a colony breeding situation. Hate to be picky but in your other post, the perches could use a good scrub for sure. :P

Personally, I would remove the other budgies and give the mother a nest to put the baby in. I have had another budgie kill chicks from another hen ....it was not a pretty sight and totally unexpected at the time. The mother "being vigilant" is also under stress to keep her baby protected. Stress brings on ilness.
