March 2, 200718 yr Hi Richard. What do you mean "not feathering propaly". I had a hen they would playfully pluck the down from her chicks. They didn't feather properly until after they left the nest. Can you put up some photos of the chicks or at least explain what you mean. We are all looking forward to helping. :budgiedance:
March 2, 200718 yr There are several things that can affect feather growth. People have mentioned pulpitis and french molt. There's also Psittacine beak and feather disease where the feathers come in formed wrong. There are also a number of other diseases that can affect feather growth. What happened to last year's clutch? We need some more information about what happened so that we can help you. Pictures would be a big help and what about the parents? Do they have normal feathers?
March 3, 200718 yr Pulpitis happens out of the nest as a result of an infection. With pulpitis they start out with feathers as per normal and then lose them with the infection. French moult happens in the nest. pulpits does occur in the nest but it occurs after the feather has developed, doesnt mean that the chicks have fledged. but a picture would help alot with this discussion thanks, Sco-tie

March 3, 200718 yr It looks very much to me like the mother or father of the babies is plucking them. Their wing feathers seem normal and they have lost feathers to the head and back of wings where plucking usually occurs. Looks like parental plucking is going on and if it has happened before the parent or parents are pluckers. You need to work out which parent is doing this and remove them and leave the other parent to continue raising the babies. Failing that a see through nest box cover of clear plastic or glass is sometimes a remedy. But I would remove the problem parent. I have the same thing happening right now and removed the mother who was plucking one baby. Edited March 3, 200718 yr by Bubbles

March 5, 200718 yr This is all I can think it is as well (plucking) You can take the whole family to the vets (avian) to get the bub checked out for any issues. You said this has happened before, did the other babies survive? Did their feathers grow in after leaving the nest and parents?
