Chewing On Jewellery... Harmfull?

hello everyone!

my budgie LLOOOOVES chewing on my gold chain necklace - does anyone know if he can damage his beak or if he could break the chain? Don't want to have a damaged bugie or necklace!

thankyou, hope you are having and awesome day :ausb:

:ausb: I always have a gold chain around my neck for as long as I can remember. Most of the other species ignore it but the cockatiels (have had 3 now), all enjoy chewing on it. Since it is a high quality metal (14k or 18k, I cannot remember) and doesn't flake or chip, I am sure it is fine for them to nibble it, low quality metallic chains are probably a different story as residue could be ingested by them. I can't fasten the tiny little lobster clasp myself without a lot of frustration but 2 of them have easily figured out how to! With my late tiel Cricket, I had to resort to wearing a silk scarf around my neck! The only drawback to us, as the jeweler explained it and showed me by magnifying glass, the chewing can weaken/lengthen the chain length/strength over time meaning that the necklace will not last as long as we wanted it to. Repairs can be done but it is so expensive it is probably better to get a new gold chain. :ygbudgie:

Thanks phoebe, very helpfull! it's a really thin chain so might not let him munch onit :ausb:

:ausb: The links will weaken quickly then, UNLESS you put budgie proof equipment around your neck (scarf)! :(Laughing out loud):

:ausb: I can't take the chain off, just like I cannot go without earrings or a watch, I feel....?naked? :) (but I do take off the earrings and watch when I am at home, just can't let go of the chain).
