we just persisted with the sponge and they are all normal little birdies now. Unfortunately 2 of them flew away

Although their legs were only mild to start with. Each morning and afternoon I would check them and if the splint had come off I would put them on a flat surface and get them walking to see if they could walk properly. If not I would put on another splint. I did this because just picking them up, they spread their legs out anyway so still look splayed. If you know what I mean?

 

I also couldnt splint them without my partner helping as its impossible to keep their little legs still without hurting them.

G'day all. We've had 4 splayed leg problems with chicks since June. Definitely not calcium as they get supplements int their daily water changes, plus we supply plenty of grit & cuttle. We suspect there is a genetic factor at play from one breeding pair that has produced two splayed legged chicks that failed to respond to treatment & had to be euthanised. There is a fair bit of wood shavings present in the wooden nest box. Of the two other birds, one recovered successfully & the other has nerve damage to the right foot which appears to be giving the bird some pain. Currently he seems to be managing, feeding, perching & interacting okay, but we are assessing his quality of life over the next week or so. I also had a nest with 3 splayed chicks. BECAUSE OF PLASTIC INSERT.

 

I fixed all 3, after trying make up sponge (mine kept falling and lying on one side). With a bit of patience I used pipe cleaners, a loop around one led fairly snug so it couldn't pull foot out figure 8 stlye loop around other leg, tight enough to align hip's in position, I did mine around ankle but others say ABOVE KNEE so they can get around better. I left mine on for nearly a week I think, checking every couple of days to see if it was working as legs align you can tighten loop a bit to keep in position. Mine are now flying around have bred young of their own, you can't pick them from other birds.

 

Depending on age and severity of splay, mine were nearly 2 weeks in one case and really splayed, it's worth trying if mine came good in my first breeding season anyone else could try before destroying possible great birds. Hope this helps.

On most cases its a combination of lack of calcium and possibly the hen sitting too hard on the chicks, as well as slippery nestbox floor. Not inherited.

Hi, I'm new to this site and not an experienced budgie keeper. We have three budgies in a good sized cage and they have been happily living together for over twelve months. Recently a rat chewed a hole in the bottom of the cage and it allowed one of our birds to escape and it never returned. We bought a new budgie from our local pet store to replace it. This new budgie has splayed legs. The lady at the pet store assured me it was something that will correct itself as it grows stronger. I have been reading up on the subject and I'm beginning to realise that this is not the case. When we put the bird into our cage at home. Our male budgie started to attack the baby immediately. I have removed him (or her) from the cage and purchased a cage that it can stay in by itself. The lady at the pet store told me that the budgie is 7 weeks old. My question is, is that too late to try and correct the legs? Will I do more harm than good to even try? He spends most of his day at the bottom of the cage but occasionally he tries to climb up the cage. I really hope there is something I can do to help him. I will take him to vet if things don't improve quickly. Just thought I ask here first to see if it was worth me trying to correct the problem myself. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated

I'm new to this forum and I'm very concerned about my baby budgy. He is 7 weeks old (that's what the seller said) I brought him home and he can't perch. Upon inspection I found his left leg is a bit weird. Plz see the picture. Can someone kindly help me?? :S seems like splayed to me but I could be wrong. How do I fix it....
