Bleediing And Flight Feathers

Featured Replies

Once Franklyn went into the avairy I noticed that he could not fly upwards. HE can only fly straight across and down. And once he gets on the floor he has to climb back up to the top.

I also noticed that Franklyn started to bleed from his wings wheneveer he did allot of flying.

So I caught him up and after a bit of a clean up I could see clearer what is going on.

His first flight feather on either side has two feathers growing from the one place. The feather on the top side is short but fully formed while the feather on the underside is just a pin feather and is obvioulsy the sorce of the bleeding. It is fully cloted now.

It has been suggested to me that since he is fairly calm around people the best thing to do might be to clip his other flight feathers to stop him flying and starting the bleeding all the time.

This is the first time I have seen this in my birds. So Franklyn is being separated and carefully watched for now. Anyone had any experience with this or any advice?[other then the obvious take him to the vet?]

this is my beautiful boy

cheers

He is such a handsome fellow

okay well this is similar to what happened with Stubby. He couldn't fly up very well and often had crashes which caused his feathers to get damaged and he would bleed. I took him to the vet who did $300 worth of tests on him (which all came back negative) gave me a bottle of antibiotics which would stop any infection and said that maybe he would be better as a indoor cage bird. So we have kept him inside and now he is thriving!!!! He is such a fat and happy bird now and he says 'Stubby good boy' hehe

Maybe franklyn hurts his wings when he 'crashes' to the ground? Maybe a smaller cage would help him too.

I know this is not an option for everyone. I'm sure someone will have some great ideas on how to modify your aviary to help your little guy too :D Good luck franklyn!!

This is Stubby when he lived in the aviary. Very scruffy and he had very bad feather growth. (Thats how he got his name cos of his Stubby tail)

Thanks CheekyChucky

I have smaller cages and he is inside with me keeping a close eye on him now. I'm happy for him to stay in with me if thats best for him.
