Posted February 19, 200718 yr What do you routinely give your aviary birds? or while in quarantine? I'm hearing more and more people having problems with certain virus/bacterial problems. Also some birds no matter if quarantined or not do not show signs of illness but could be carrying it into your flock at a later stage. Coccivet, megabac and plenty of others? how when where and why?? cheers
February 20, 200718 yr I haven't brought any new birds into my flock for quite some time. But if I were going to, I would first have them vet-checked before giving anything purported to be antibiotic or antifungal in nature. So many things can do more harm than good in masking any illness that I would not give anything "medical" that was not prescribed first. The only thing over the counter, so to speak, I would give them would be probiotics. I give them to my current birds on a regular basis in addition to the widest variety of foods I can come up with, and that seems to keep them all in excellent health.
February 20, 200718 yr I have only given my birds vet prescribed medicine. We even asked him about putting supplements in the water of our ancient bird because at the time she only ate seed, and he seemed to think that less is better. If they're eating a fortified diet of seeds, pellets and veggies, they should be getting all the vitamins they need. Adding to the water only increases chances of getting too much of certain vitamins (which isn't good) and it also increases the bacterial growth in the water. As far as probiotics go, they are good for keeping the digestive system healthy, but I would still see if the vet recommends it. Its very difficult to ensure the amounts the birds are getting of things put in their water.
February 20, 200718 yr I don't put the probiotics in the water, I sprinkle them on cooked foods, sprouted seeds, and over their pellets. I totally agree with armchairangel about not putting additives in the water. Unless water is the only medium you can get meds into your bird by, I don't put anything in the water as it usually encourages bacterial growth at an accelerated rate. I have heard of putting cider vinegar or GSE in the water to discourage bacterial growth, but I don't think it would be a good idea to mix those with any meds that would go into the water.
February 21, 200718 yr Probiotics doesn't mix with cider vinegar or Avicleans. I didn't think of sprinkling Probiotics on the fresh food rather than the water, good idea Rainbow.
February 21, 200718 yr Mine are currently on a week long course of Coccivet, which is given through their water. As all of my birds have come from such a wide variety of sources, I want to make sure that they are not carrying anything unexpected before I start a breeding program. Following the coccivet they will go onto probotics. Mine will also be wormed at some stage prior to breeding. Aly
