Posted February 19, 200718 yr Got home from work tonight and, as usual, went straight to cage, BUT IT WAS EMPTY!!!! went into complete panic as my budgie can't fly and it was kinda hot today, and is long way to ground to fall from his cage and where the *** was he???? Then i hear a little chirp and there he is sitting on the floor behind the cage! poor little guy was really thirsty and hungry. I have absolutely no idea how he got out, the doors are wired shut, could he have squeezed through wires? now am really worried he's going to do it again, he not safe on his own wondering around on the floor all day!!! What to do??? any suggestions??? here is photo of cage - are gaps too big? he is a very small budgie. tried to get my hand in shot to get idea of perspective.
February 19, 200718 yr The gap between the bars looks a little wide. I had a cage like that and lost 3 budgies before I figured out it was the cage. He may have lifted a flap type door or a door that slides up and down. Failing that, you must go over the cage, think like a budgie and you will work out the problem  Edited February 19, 200718 yr by Bubbles
February 19, 200718 yr The space bars should be no more then 1/2 inches for budgies that looks more like a cockatiel cage.
February 19, 200718 yr Definately the bars are too wide. And now that your budgie has escaped once he is bound to do it again. They are smart little things! You may need to invest in a new cage. And then you can get a bigger bird for that cage :hap:
February 20, 200718 yr :ausb: Yes, a new cage is in order, one of mine has even figured out to squeeze through the tiny cage tray opening when I am cleaning the cage floor! My favourite budgie of all time, Mickey, was a real Houdini too.
February 20, 200718 yr :ausb: Heh heh, they're so clever aren't they! I had a similar problem before Christmas; I came home and one cage had only 1 budgie in it instead of 2! One of my babies (only 6 weeks old) had figured out how to lift up the doors over his feed and escaped. Luckily we noticed him before Mitzi the cat did, or it could've been ugly. After I caught the younger bird in the same cage trying to do it as well it was pegs all round! When it was time to hand Hedwig over to his new owner I made it VERY clear how clever he was and for Kyles to be extra careful He hasn't escaped again .. yet! Good luck with the shopping!
February 20, 200718 yr Also if you are worried about him getting out before you get the new cage, a small dish of seed out side on the cage maybe can help with the food. I think he would be fine with out water for that time.
February 20, 200718 yr Yep, budgies can go up to 10 days without water, but will start to die after 8 hours with no seed. Feathers.
February 20, 200718 yr Oh and I didn't see the rest of the cage but do you have a variety of perches? I just see the dowel...just being nosy NO serious when you get a new cage you can buy rope perches, natural etc.. too and if you don't need that cage you can do what Bea did and sell it on e-bay at least you can get something back
