1 Girl Mating With 2 Boys

Featured Replies

Hi i have a small problem

My hen has mated with to different boys in the avairy,

this has caused a conflict between the boys.

i have removed 1

I also have 8 breeding boxes in the avairy but another hen i have has taken over all of them

which has caused big fights to the point of removal of the hen that is mating,

but i have put her with the male she has mated with last, is that what i am ment to do?

any help welcome and comments please.

i have 3girls and 2 boys if that is helpfull.

Hopefully someone who knows more about breeding and keeping a large flock of birds will come along and give you better advice than what I have to offer. I have mostly heard that when there is a problem in the flock, they remove the one causing the problem - i.e. the one who has taken over all the nests. Not sure what to do about the multiple matings though.

I have never colony bred, simply for the problems you have now.

Yes removal of the problem maker is the way to go. You can set her and the male up in a single cage with a nest box to continue their breeding.

Look at how close the nest boxes are to each other, if bumper to bumper territorially issues can arise which might have been the start of the hen trying to take them all.

You have territorial issues as Nerwen has stated. Some more inofrmation on the size and set out of your aviary, location and proximity of nestboxes etc., would help for anyone to advise you. Do you have any pictures you can post ?

Cheers Karen

thank you i have set the pair that have been attacked up in a cage with a nest box and they are still mating

i will take a few photos later today and post them for your expert help thank you again
