okay,, my birds are in the garage out back in breeding cage with nest box, there are 2 babys in box 5 and 7 days old.. my question is. its aprox 37 or 38 deg outside, altho cooler and shaded in garge im worried for them. can they regulate their temp and how hot is 2 hot, i was thinking to move them inside, but then would that stress mum out, she is out of box a lot today, they have ample water and i have sprayed them with a fine mist a few times.. should i leave them there .??? babys are well fed and seem okay there is only the one hole in box for her to get in out.? thought about drilling more but dont want to stress them..??? what can i do???

Give mum an outside the nesting box treat to keep her occupied and drill some vent holes along the side

( top edge ) of the nesting box. Make sure you have fresh and clean nesting materials like wood shavings to keep the box cooler. If Mum and Dad are panting, they are hot. Use that as a sign of how uncomfortable they are. Put a temperature guage in where they are and monitor it for comfort levels. I run an evaporative

( water cooled ) water cooler in my bird room where parents are nesting on a hot day. Believe me the birds will thank you for that. Water cooled due to humidity required to keep eggs hatching.

Also a normal fan blowing on them on hot days like that will not hurt them.

I had some hot days while bubs where in the box too and I would leave the door (on top) open with a damp rag over the hole so no one got out. It did made it a bit cooler for the bubs.

I didn't think of putting holes along the top.

hmm just thought maybe i could of put some wire secured somehow over the opening when lid is off. but then maybe mum wont go in there?, any way i put some holes in and it cooled down a bit, but is going to be hot tomorrow and sunday so i might bring them in and put the evap cooler near them..

I have cut some aviary mesh and used it in place of the sliding lid to the nestbox when chicks were hot during the day only. But that was when chicks were older and Mum wasn't needed as much in the nesting box, so she didnt mind at all. The chicks appreciated it though.
