Hey everyone this is my first post here and i got a question. I have 12 birds all in good shape i.e good colored and consisitancy of droppings, not fluffy, they constantly chatter( so loud in fact when all of them get "argueing with each other" they even drown out the t.v.!!) and actively hop and fly about the multi cage set up (well they are clipped because there in dooor birds)and play with/destroy their toys and all eat plenty of seed and veg diet (lots of purple lettuces spinach dandilion greens ect)but a few of them seem to get a wheezing or clicking every once and a while its odd cause its not on a daily basis and its mainly in the first few birds i had gotten...any thoughts as ive heard it can be from a vitamin deficency or possibly iodine deficency??

Wheezing as in sneezing? Or wheezing has when they are breathing?

well i've noticed one(jack a yellow and green dom pied with possible cinnamon wing??) does it kinda randomly more like a clicking and a rapid openening and closing of their beaks like the sound of someone smacking their lips and the other (a regular blue with white face) wheezes with a little clicking while breathing but only for a few hrs at a time i know i have a space heater on them (made sure no teflon or toxic heating elements to it) but its neccary as i NY and it gets pretty cold here (was in the teens this week)

Is there any chance that they are feeling hot when you notice this. My birds do exactly as you describe when they are hot. :grbud:

Good point Karen, since we are not hot (Laughing out loud) I didn't even think about that. You know I live in Ohio and my birds do well without anything extra it may be something you want to consider. We keep our home about 60 in the night and 65-68 during the day, because the gas prices are so high. We deal with the same exact weather in fact we give it to you after we had it :grbud:. So maybe a heater is not essential for them.

Thanks for all the advice guys she was breathing a little hard this a.m. so we called a local avian vet and brought her in. They're running a few tests at the moment (gotta wait till the end of the week for the results)and gave her a broad based antibiotic. Weve got our fingers crossed its nothing contagious....

Good on you for doing the right thing and taken your little budgie girl in. Avian vets can do so much for budgies and I hope that you've caught it early enough. Turbs.

Great. I hope it's nothing more than a respiritory infection.

thanks for all the good vibes everyone Sumo seems to be breathing a lil clearer after the shot (shes got 3 more) Found an execellent avian vet her name is Heide Hoefer google the name if u happen to need an avian vet in NY, USA shes written dozens of papers on birds with lots o crednetials..no word on the tests though labs taking a long time!

Sounds like the start of a respiratory infection, although something else to consider is if they are out of shape or not. :) They don't have to be fat to be out of shape. If they have not flown much and don't regularly get a good flapping workout any exertion will bring on that clicking noise. Another possibility is thyroid issues.

I'm glad you've found an avian vet-they are worth their weight in gold. And I know how frustrating it is waiting for lab results! They seem to take forever to come back sometimes. Let us know what you find out.

Good luck witheverything, hope that it is nothing too serious
