Twitching And Aggression

Hi everyone!

I'm worried about Softie :D She is a bit older than Charlie - about 2-3 years old - whereas Charlie :) is about 1 1/2 years or so. Now, I took them both in the car with me as I travelled from the east part of the country to move to the West. It took a while for them to settle when I finally found a permanent place to live. It's been 5 months now, and they are finally coming out of the cage again and flying around like before.

I first noticed Softie twitching in her sleep maybe 3 months ago, just an odd little twitch, like a nervous thing, but it was continuous only during sleep. Awake she seemed her regular self. But I noticed today that she is twitching more and when Charlie comes near, she kind of screeches and pecks at him with her beak so that he doesn't come near. She fluffs and preens herself and her body never seems to be still. Like she is PMSing or something. Does she need iodine or calcium? Then why isn't Charlie twitching too? I think he is puzzled too and wants his cuddling friend back.

She also seems to look sleepy or depressed maybe, not showing interest in me or anything. Not as energetic or excited as before. What does this mean? Do I have to take her to a bird vet? It's about an hours drive away, so I want to be sure that there isn't something I can do to help her first.

Thanks a bunch! Please get back with your comments soon! :feedbirds:

I think I would call your vet and ask their opinion. It isn't normal, so you know something is going on. Whether it is stress or illness-related I can't say. I think if you give them her symptoms, their onset, their current diet, appearance, etc. they will be able to let you know whether you should bring her in. I understand you have a long drive, so let them know that. I'm thinking you will need to have her seen. I'd bring both of them in for a visit if you are going to take one.

:) Hello to a fellow Canadian, it all sounds very strange to me about the twitching. We can't diagnose here so it is best you take your girl to an avian vet to get checked out. She will feel better and you will fell a whole lot better not to mention Charlie. As well, you will get yourself established with an avian vet. Good luck to all of you! :)

Thank you for your replies. I will let you know how Softie and Charlie are getting on once I have this matter looked into more closely. Cheers from Canada.
