Hi my name is Julie,

I have only just started in the breeding game/hobby. I have 9 budgies including a Latino and an Albino (both hens), a green (English cock), Green (hen) and blue (cock), a grey(cock), pied (hens), and I think have a clearwing (hen) and a pastel (hen).

I havent started to breed them yet, as I am in the process of working out the best kind of aviary to keep them in. I have them all in 4 medium sized cages of 2 or 3.

My pastel hen come with a few eggs (3) and has laid one since she has arrived here. But she is not sitting on them. Is this normal??? Or when should I remove them from the nesting box that they are in? She is paired up the grey cock.

Since this is my first time attempting to breed budgies, I could do with any help or advice that you can offer me.

I have a few questions too...I will list them below.

Can you change cocks if they have had a partner before?

With my latino and albino budgies, what kind of cock would I need to get for them, so that I end up with more latinos and albinos?

Can I get a cinnamon from the birds that I already have?

How many eggs do they lay before nesting and hatching?

The length of time it takes to hatch an egg?

okay I have worn myself out with the questions for now.

Cheers,

Julie

:) Welcome Julie, cannot help you myself as I am a pet owner but breeders should show up at some point.

Hi Julie and welcome to the boards. It sounds like you have a nice collection of colours there. Have you signed on with a club to start showing budgies and this is your start? or are you just wanting a flock of colourful birds to enjoy?

Do you know how old these eggs are and if she was sitting on them before? the move to the new location is most likely the reason why she isn't sitting on them now. Looking at your questions below it seems a bit early for you to be caring for eggs and babies just yet and would suggest removing eggs and box from site to give you time to learn more and set up your aviary (and breeding area) also it will give you time to know your new birds and if they are hiding any illness, which the stress of a new home can bring out.

1. Yes you can change partners for both males and females, give a 7-10 day period of breaking up a pair to adding a new partner.

2. Ino is a sex linked trait, which means males need to get two of the genes to show. Another ino cock or one that you know is slpit for ino (carrying it) will give you a mix of Ino males and female offspring. Keep in mind hen can not carry a sex linked trait.

3. From the information you have given us- No. But one of the males could be split for it. If you got the birds from the breeder s/he would have been able to tell you that. Cinnamon is another sex linked trait.

4. It is different for each hen. on average 5-6 per clutch.

5. it take on average 18 days for an egg to hatch, depending on how well the mother sat on them and other factors it can take a few days longer.

Thanks Nerwen, it has been very helpful.

But I am not familiar with 'INO'? What does that mean?

No I am not a member of any bird clubs. I am not sure that there is one near my hometown, I might have to check out the phonebook to see.

Thanks Feathers. Your collection of budgies are beautiful.

 Sorry about that Julie. Ino is the shortened from meaning both Lutino and Albino

It is referring to the actually gene. You need a blue gene and the ino gene to get an albino.

yesterday, my son accidently let 2 of my budgies out of their cage by leaving the feeding door slightly open. I lost my English cock, and a green hen. I am so sad, as I wanted to pair up the english cock with my pastel hen. I guess I will have to keep an eye out for a new one. Somewhere along the way.

Sorry for your loss. Did they pass away or fly away? I've heard the odd story about budgies that have escaped coming home and clinging to the outside of an aviary.

Sorry to here that 2 got away. Put out flyer's and check pounds and vets near you in case someone turned them (or one) in. If your show bird had a ring on his foot that can be used to identify him.

They flew away....I dont know if they would come back, and unfortunately, I did not take note of the ring's ID when mum collected him. We will put a sign up in our area, to see if anyone has found them.

:) Hope they find their way back to you. :(

Julie, that is really sad, I am so sorry. Give your son a hug for me I am sure he feels just terrible (my son accidentally lost one of mine recently and I know how badly he was feeling).

Julie, don't give up just yet, Bruce once got out and he came back to his cage and I was able to catch him by throwing a towel over him at night. Last weekend Blossom got out and after spending one night out on her own she came back the following evening, I left an open cage out for her with food she eventually found her way into the cage and she is now back with her family. I hope it works out for you!!

Unfortunately, none of my birds have returned. No one has seen them either. I would say that they have found somewhere to live and play now, I just hope that no cat or other preditors got them. I still have a cage outside open for them but no luck.

So sorry, don't give up completely though, check checking ads in your locals papers in case someone advertises a found bird.

i just added a new bird to my flock. Its a very yellow latino. I brought her at our local sales in Warwick. I am not sure if she is male or female, but I think it might be a she. I will take photos later and post them here.

:ausb: So sorry that none of your guys returned, would still hope. And I would guess your new addition is in quarantine? Looking forward to the photos. :oliveb:
