Rocky To What? And Why?

if Rocky were your bird what would YOU pair him with and why?

Rocky is a; YFTII Muave Opaline Greywing cock.

forgot to add, he MAY be a dark grey instead of muave as his cheek patches are dark slate, his over all color confuses me.

wow he is simply gorgeous Dingo :)

Well I wanted to produce more blue greywings I would use a known female split to greywing or if I wanted 100% greywing use a greywing female.

You can use an opaline female to produce 100% opalines but if you are okay with the 50% chance and the opalines would be hens then your hen doesn't need to be opaline :D.

I would use blue I love blues or at least a green that is split to blue to get more blue babies for sure.

Yellow face is an awesome mutation when it doesn't get carried out of hand like when it turns the bird completely green. Not that it is pretty but I am more in favor of a Type 2 that bleeds but doesn't change the birds color completely. But I am not sure if that is something you can control with this gene. Type 1 of course is more desired in the show ring as 2 is a default if I remember Daz's information correctly.

Though you can't throw out that normal gene because yellow face mauves and cobalts are I believe gorgous. So breeding him to a normal even there their are no splits and blue normal would create normal but beautiful babies.

Those are my thoughts :D

I love the blues Rocky is my only "green" bird right now though, I dont want to lose my blues to the green gene :)

and I'd really love more grey wings, but this is about what ya'll would breed him with not me!.. and your reason for choosing that particular mutation.

Thanks for the reply Lovey, anyone else?

oh and the chick I am keeping should be split for clearwing and she will be bred to him in '08.

I can't really tell from the picture.. but there is something else at work with his coloring (I think) -- first I thought recessive pied -- but that's out since he has a blue cere and iris rings -- maybe dF dominant pied.

I'd breed him to a normal grey, if I could find one - that would be my preference. You may get opaline grey females or yellowface opaline grey -- and if I'm right about him being pied -- you'd get pieds as well.

Is the clearwing chick from another pair? -- a hen split to clearwing could give you full body color greywings (or clearwings if Rocky is a full body color greywing ------ or clearwings if he is a greywing split to dilute)

Rocky is green? I thought he was a YF2?

Yes my statement would be that is what I would do too. I would personally like to have anouther Rocky he is gorgeous :)

he is visually green but a white based bird, the YF turned him green.

the chick is from my first breeding of a sky blue clearwing clearflight YFTII hen to a dominant pied opaline cobalt cock, the chick is a blue dominant pied opaline YFTII, and if I am correct should be split to clearwing.

Rocky doesn't have a pied spot I think his splotchiness if from the YF.

this is a picture of Rocky at about 10 weeks

he certainly was a find.

gotcha that is what I thought :D

Reading about the clearwing gene is is co-dominant with the greywing gene. When a budgie has both the greywing and clearwing gene, it is a full-body-color greywing with grey wing markings and bright body color. This is what makes his body bright vs being diluted out.

Now here is something interesting if you decided to breed him to a full-body grey wing the results are

50% Full-body-color greywing

25% Greywing

25% Clearwing

no one else has any opinions or ideas?

Rocky is a; YFTII Muave Opaline Greywing cock.

If these are the parents of Rocky then he can't be opaline. Hens can not carry the gene and for a male to show as opaline they need two of the gene. All the hens from that clutch would be opalines. Also Cobalt to skyblue has only one dark factor to gave to all the young and mauve needs two dark factors. So either you missed something on the parents or your wrong about this fellow.

Can you tell me the colour of his tail? and any chance of getting a look at the parents?

If he was in my aviary I would look at matching him to Berry (visual violet) or Reepicheep (yellowface 2 opaline) Actually since there is Opaline in his history i would go with Reepi to get more.

I dont know what Rockies parents were I didn't breed him, he was bought at a pet store, the chick I am keeping from my last breeding is the YF opaline pied, he will be paired to her in '08.

Rockies tail is grey, I can try getting a full body picture of him if you want.

I thought about violets but they are few and far between here, suppose that may be more reason to get one. :D

heres a picture, he wasn't cooperating with me so it's a little blurry
