Posted November 10, 200420 yr okay hi everyone this is my first post i'm Steven from Jamaica, i have four budgies ( 3 hens and 1 **** ) recently one of my hens mated with the **** and shes layin eggs. i've been doin some research and everything i've read says that she should be sitting by the second or third egg. She has only layed 3 eggs dosn't seem to be laying any more; 3 days since her last egg, but she dosn't seem to be staying on the eggs. She goes in the box evry now and again, she stays for a while but she comes back out, and she does not sleep in the box during the night. what i want to know is when they say the hen sits on the eggs how often, and how long is she supposed to stay on the eggs.
November 10, 200420 yr the time may vary a bit for each bird. But if you have the others still in the cage with her and the **** then that may be bothering her a bit not to sit on them. (unless you have then in a big avery, with more than one box) It took mine a while to stay in there for longer than a few minutes. Try to leave her alone for most the day it maay help mine would dash out if she heard my vioce or a niose.
November 10, 200420 yr If she is frequently disturbed or upset for any reason she may not sit on them. If there are two other hens in the same cage with her, that may be your problem. Hath would know more about it than anyone. Maybe he will see this and can help a little more.
November 11, 200420 yr Hi again, i forgot to mention that i realised that the other hens were going to be a bother to her before she actually started laying so i removed them, and i have them in another cage. And yes she does leave the box when the cage is disturbed.
November 11, 200420 yr hi if this is the hens first round then she may take a while to relise what she has to do,i would leave her well alone so hopefully she will get the idea of what to do,give her about ten days to see if she is siting better then candle the eggs to see if they are fertile if not remove and allow her to try again
November 11, 200420 yr just to add a note to that, if you are as new as I was when I started and have no Idea what that last part ment candling is when you shine a bright light on the eggs and look for faint red lines to tell if they are fertile.
