Posted January 12, 200718 yr Hi - I was wondering if anyone had an interest in little green bush budgies. My first budgie was one of these and he lived for 14yrs. I'm looking at getting another one soon from a local breeder, as my second budgie recently passed away from a long term illness. They are so small and cute and much smaller than English budgies. Does anyone also have an interest in bush budgies? Maybe some people outside Australia haven't had even had a chance to see any...

We had some shown here at the bird show and also I see adverts for them occasionally here in Perth. They are a lot smaller but a lovely little bird. Contacting a bird club may get you in touch with someone who breeds them. Edited January 13, 200718 yr by Bubbles
January 13, 200718 yr My friends dad breeds them, but I have not seen them yet, actually I am not sure I have ever seen a true bush budgie
January 13, 200718 yr Author They are so so tiny the bushies - probably (?) 1/3 of the weight of an english budgie... And normal green of course. I'm hoping to get one soon. 6 eggs have hatched over Xmas-NY and the parents are both bush budgies. So maybe will be able to take one home in the next few weeks. Will keep him or her as a house pet. While I love all budgies (mainly because of their great personalities), I'm surprised that people don't generally go for the normal green bush budgies as much as the English ones... Several breeders say that they also find it more difficult to sell the green ones. Any experiences out there? Does anyone have an idea why green ones and bush budgies may not be so popular. As the 5 breeders I recently approached all independent said this.Or is it just the green colour (eg. maybe some just don't prefer it cause it's "typical" or something??). :ygbudgie:
January 13, 200718 yr What do you mean by bush budgie - something different to your regular pet budgie. I think of budgies in three categories: pet, show, wild.
January 13, 200718 yr I think the budgies turbs is talking about are what you would call 'wild' budgies. My friends dad told me that they can be hard to get 'pure bred' as they have been bred with 'pet' budgies. I must get a picture of them to show.
January 13, 200718 yr I always thought that even the captive bred "wild budgies" were flighty and didn't make good pets. However it does seem right that that's what we're talking about as they are smaller.
January 13, 200718 yr I've seen some bush ones and I agree they are so very very tiny compared to the others types. (show and pet) As to the colour green hard to sell, I think it's becuase there is such a range of colour now days that people want an interesting color and pattern.
January 13, 200718 yr Author I would guess that your dad's probably right... There's so much cross-breeding these days, you can never be sure... Yes, a picture would be good to show people... Wish I had one handy. I think the budgies turbs is talking about are what you would call 'wild' budgies. January 13, 200718 yr l have heard before that the wild/bush budgies where smaller in size then the domesticated variety , but l have never personally seen them only in photos but it would be interesting to see a picture of the wild/bush variety , the pet variety and the Australian show Budgie side by side in their actual size .
