Posted January 9, 200718 yr Hi, I currently have a pair of lovely 2yo blues. Female has become increasingly plump over last few weeks or more. She otherwise seems quite good. They are housed in a large hanging cage but if needed can place them in an aviary, just need do a swap with an elderly cockatiel we have. Hoping someone can help with what may be something quite obvious. Thankyou
January 9, 200718 yr I think you should take the bird to an avian vet to check for a possible tumour.
January 9, 200718 yr Where has she become 'plump'? My budgie Gloria (RIP) had a hernia which caused a large lump near her bottom. I thought she was egg bound but when I took her to an avian vet the hernia was found. So just get her checked out to be certain. If you need help finding a vet in your area let us know cos we can help.

My girl is plump all over so to speak, still very chatty & exercising so doesn't appear to be ill whatsoever. Have checked her droppings they are normal, she's eating as normal etc. We had a beautiful yellow budgie some years back that formed a tumor near it's bottom so 1st thing I did was look for similar signs which thankfully doesn't seem to be problem. As to the Avian vet am not sure in our area we are in Wollongong, NSW if can assist would be very grateful. Thankyou again for offer of assistance. Thankyou for your advice but had a yellow adult male quite few years back now that had a tumour form near it's bottom sadly wasn't much vet could do. Have checked this female for similar problem but all seems quite okay in that area. She is quite happy girl just is so very plump maybe need to move them both into aviary & see what progresses from there! Thankyou for your advice & will pursue further! Have appointment for regular vet on friday, was there today with my dog & asked questions regarding bird, obviously needs to look @ her. :ygbudgie:
January 10, 200718 yr Vetafarm has a list of avian vets. There's a Dr Cannon in West Wollongong. http://www.vetafarm.com.au/avian_vets.asp?state=nsw
January 10, 200718 yr I had some budgies that were "plump"...they felt squooshy to touch and they were obviously overweight. Even though the aviary they were in at the time was 30ft by 10ft by 10ft and they had heaps of space, they werent flying enough. Some of the "plump" ones were nesting females and weren't getting enough exercise either. So a plan came into action. They had a change of diet, removed more than half the perches so they had to fly around some more and now they are so, so healthy. I stopped the premium budgie breeder seed they were on and gave them finch mix instead. No waste, they eat it all and they have never looked healthier. Maybe look at the cage size and arrangement of perches and a diet change and see if that helps ?

Hopefully your budgie is just overweight and you can fix it by doing the same sorts of things as Bubbles did with hers. It would be best if you can take it to the avian vet that Bluey found for you, rather than a general vet. It would be good to get a clean bill of health and put your mind at rest.
January 10, 200718 yr hehe sounds like your budgies are a bit fat to me (Laughing out loud) they are so funny when they are fat so you show possibly cut down on the millet and give more exersise, also show breeds tend to become bigger and fatter looking due to genetics. Sco-tie
January 10, 200718 yr Bubbles, do you know what the finch mix consists of, by comparison? Sounds like you had very good luck w/ the changes you made. We became pretty familiar w/ the various budgies for sale in the pet shops near us prior to getting ours, and when I went back & visited about a month later, I was shocked to see how large some of those budgies had gotten. The shops keep a couple sprays of millet on hand at most times, and although it may be the right amount for the number of budgies they're keeping together, the problem is that the more mature budgies bully the newcomers away from it, and hog it all to themselves! The biggest budgie I've seen was an older male that "ruled the roost" at one of the smaller shops. I suspect he had been there for quite some time. It was an effort for him to move around the cage, and everytime he'd land on this tree-type perch, you'd see all the other budgies bounce up & down! ~~~ Kali
January 10, 200718 yr When I realised that my little Lemon required to go on a diet, I cut down on her seed rations to only about two teaspoon a day with a lot more fresh veggies. she went to town with the fresh vegs once she's demolish her daily ration of seed. She lost about 15 grams over a period of about one month. she's still on the 'big' side, but she's okay now, she can fly without puffing out and will actually move around instead of just sitting on top of the curtain rail like she used to when she's out of her cage.

I am not sure what seeds are in finch mix. maybe someone else does. I buy all seed in 40 kilo sacks and the types are premixed from local west australian grains. I know it doesnt have hulled oats in it though and that was making my budgies fat. I do give my birds lots of fresh vegies as well. Chinese vegies like pak choy and bok choy silver beet to the aviaries but not the breeders. Corn on the cob. Grated carrot. Home made eggfood.
January 11, 200718 yr Yes it will be good to get a check over with an avian vet, but since you have seen a tumor before and commented on that this is even filling all over it sounds like she is overweight. I had one overweight bird that my vet told me to change the diet to finch mix and have also been told canary mix does the same trick. This might be all you need to do as well.
January 11, 200718 yr I was told canary mix too or finch. But when I tried the canary mix first, they wasted a lot of the seeds. With the finch mix they eat all.
