Posted January 6, 200718 yr Woohoo, I thought I would join this forum seeing as I bought a few more budgies today and figured it would be fun to chat about them! I've had a handreared Albino hen for a couple of months now (I handraised her) But she recently hit 6months and decided human contact was nolonger desirable. So we went to the petshop planning to get her a mate... but came home with 3! :bluebudgie: Here they are: I plan on breeding the once they reach Maturity and Handrear the babies to sell as pets. Some of the older budgies in the enclosure at the pet shop had scaley face, my two you males have been scratching their faces on the perches quite alot so i'm guessing they have it to, just not visually yet. Does anyone here have a treatment for it? Where I work we mix Dettol and Oil and paint it on - it seems to get rid of the mites very quickly but causes the birds a bit of discomfort... does any one have a better idea? Thanks, hope the forum will help me out on my foray into the Budgie world! - ellu
January 6, 200718 yr Welcome to the forums! Good to see another Canberran! :bluebudgie: Your new budgies are just GORGEOUS! For scaly face you can get something called ivermectin from your avian vet. It's not too expensive for a little bottle and it'll last you ages. It's one drop on the back of their neck and then you do that again in a fortnight. I've found it clears scaly face up super quick! :dbb1: A good thing to have around.
January 6, 200718 yr An avian vet can give meds for scaly face. There is one out now that is a spot on treatment like you do for fleas on dogs. Which Oil do you use? Baby Oil? that used on it's own works as well. edit to add - Seems Bea and I posted over each other. It's the ivermectin I was talking about I never remember what it is called. January 6, 200718 yr Oh Yes, I've heard of that one! I will deffinatley look into it. :dbb1: I'm so glad I found another Canberran too! I've been reading through the site all afternoon and most people i'e seen are from Brisbane or elsewhere in QLD! Seems like all the bird breeders are up there... :bluebudgie:
January 6, 200718 yr Welcome! Your birds are so pretty :bluebudgie: Make sure you quarantine your new birds for at least a month, 3 months is the surest, just in case they are carrying something that might affect your first bird :dbb1:
January 6, 200718 yr Hi , welcome to the forums :bluebudgie: your new budgies are absolutely goergous . Edited January 6, 200718 yr by birdluv
January 6, 200718 yr Hi Ellu, welcome to the forum. It is a great place to chat about your birds, which are gorgeous I might add! Ivermectin was the treatment we had for my daughter's budgie too... works great. Did you tell the pet store that their birds had scaley face. Believe it or not, they may not realise. Feathers.
January 6, 200718 yr The Man who owns the petshop is pretty knowledgeable about birds - I'm sure he know and was either treating it or didn't care. Normally I wouldn't by birds from him but these ones where to pretty to leave behind x)
January 6, 200718 yr I have used vasaline it works awsome just don't get in inside the mouth. Hold the bird very still and take a cue tip, place a good amount of vasalien on the end and just run it around the mouth twice In a U shape LIKE THE SIDES and UNDERNEATH. Do not get it anywhere inside teh mouth or over top of teh nostrals. It is very thick and drowns out the mites and the scales fall off because of the moisture in the vasaline. It is ussually gone in 2 - 3 days of treament. Once a day is good.
January 7, 200718 yr If you use oils or vaseline you just need to take care that you don't get it on their feathers too much.
January 8, 200718 yr Hi Ellu, your birds are gorgeous! If you use something like Ivermectin then have a vet do it as I have heard of birds dying from this treatment. It was never designed for birds.
