Crusty Ceres

Featured Replies

Posted

I've noticed that a couple of my budgies have smallish nostrils and when their ceres get crusty they seem to cover completely. How are they breathing. Is this normal?

Any thoughts on this appreciated. Thanks!

It will happen when they are 'in season'. Females' ceres especially will grow up to 3mm in some cases of my hens. When a male is especially 'full of vigor' his cere can also grow.

It does not affect their breathing.

In saying the above, keep a close watch on your birds if you become concerned that all is not well then by all means a visit to the vet is in order.

One of my hens has crusty cere all the time. I first thought it's mites, but my avian vet said it's hormonal. She just said I must watch her if it grows too big, she would cut it off, but it's not necessary.

I hope yours will be okay too :(
