Posted January 4, 200718 yr Hi Can anyone help me . I am caring for a a budgie with lumps on his chest and body. The owner at the pet shop said it could be a tumer and that he could live for a couple more years. I feel I should take him to the vet to have him checked out to see if it is a tumer?. He does not look sick or fluffed up and is flying around his cage normally and is eating and drinking.I give him fresh vegetables, seed and water and there are toys in his cage. I would like to get him a bigger cage as the one he is in now is a cylinder style cage. What more can I do to care and help him. Very Concerned
January 4, 200718 yr You should get him seen by an avian vet who can diagnose what types of tumors (or maybe even cysts) that they are. The most common are fatty lipomas, which are just what they sound like: buildup of fat. These can be managed and even reduced by putting your budgie on a low fat diet and making sure that it gets a good amount of exercise. A bigger cage is a wonderful idea. These tumors only become life threatening if they grow and/or put pressure on an organ inside the body. These tumors are soft, since they are made up of fat. Have your avian vet check the bird out and he/she can advise you on the best course of action depending on what type of tumors these are and their severity. Let us know how it goes, please!
January 4, 200718 yr Two of my budgies have "fatty" tumors, lipomas and they are on medication for them and doing just fine, they are just not the greatest flyers of all time, one of them is 8 years old. May I suggest you get a wider, longer cage as budgies are not helicopters. My first cage was a cylinder cage but I quite quickly found the disadvantages of this, don't know why they sell the silly things, esethics I guess. :greenb:
