January 3, 200718 yr Author some nice starter birds there wouldnt mind a couple of them my self Thanks Hath  Daz has been most helpful with advice and we have some good breeders over here with some good culls happening. I have joined two clubs, one a great deal more progressive than the other and with a programme to give the newbies a kick start so they become competitive sooner and enabling them access to good birds. Here is my new club http://www.swbudgerigarclubmandurah.com/ Edited January 3, 200718 yr by Bubbles
January 3, 200718 yr sounds and looks like a very good club i wish more clubs and breeders were like this it would help attract younger people into the hobby away from video games
January 3, 200718 yr Author The tops of their heads are so round! Is that a breed standard for show? Yes but its not their heads....it's just feathering. Edited January 3, 200718 yr by Bubbles
January 4, 200718 yr They're all very beautiful looking. Are you're show budgies in a separate aviary to the others?
January 4, 200718 yr Author They're all very beautiful looking. Are you're show budgies in a separate aviary to the others? Separate...? Yes and No. Some are still in quarantine, some are in breeder cages, and some younger ones are in with the main population for socialisation skills. However, as soon as the next aviary division happens (i.e. door and mesh between new bird room and 3 rd aviary ) the whole lot of my birds will be separated into....males in one aviary and females in another aviary. Ken is doing the door and mesh today. I will have a smaller aviary for birds due to go to show, so they can be conditioned for showing. This smaller aviary will have access via the smaller bird room / food storage room. Edited January 4, 200718 yr by Bubbles
January 4, 200718 yr Ahhh... So the feathers are longer and fluffed out more to give them that shape. They look so different from other budgies! I always wondered why.
January 4, 200718 yr Author Ahhh... So the feathers are longer and fluffed out more to give them that shape. They look so different from other budgies! I always wondered why. Thats right. Even though the birds are heavier than the average budgie, mostly its feathers that give them the "look". Even the average pet type budgie male poofs the feathers forward on his head to impress the girls. Watch closely and you will see them do it. But in the show budgie their feathering is more so ..and it shows more than on an average budgie. On another note, as I have both types of budgies, the show budgie I have noticed is a far more gentle natured bird. More easily handled. Edited January 4, 200718 yr by Bubbles
January 4, 200718 yr I have noticed that too - about the larger show budgie being a more laid-back personality. I have both read about and been around "English" budgies and they do seem to take a more laid back approach to what goes on around them. My (American budgie) birds are really tame and I have to say they are more skittish than any "English" budgie I have been around. Your birds are lovely as usual!
January 5, 200718 yr Beautfiul! I love the Cinnamon Grey cock! What a beautiful budgie! That one would go great with my Cin Grey hen! :hap:
January 6, 200718 yr Author Beautfiul! I love the Cinnamon Grey cock! What a beautiful budgie! That one would go great with my Cin Grey hen! He has good bloodlines. He is a Cec Gearing bird http://www.swbudgerigarclubmandurah.com/

January 7, 200718 yr Author Wow, I love that male (dom pied?) He is a stunner... He's lovely. I also have his daughter as well.
January 7, 200718 yr out of curiosity what made you pair these birds, the breeders you bought them from or some one else or did you decide
January 7, 200718 yr Author Some advice on some of them and the rest is just me trying to work it out
January 7, 200718 yr Author did you have a system Not quite yet Mostly "flying by the seat of my pants" so far. Happy to take advice.
January 7, 200718 yr i place all hens in a breeding cage and all cocks in a seperate one i then get 6 show cages now i feel it is the hen that is the most important part of the pair so i take a hen place her in a show cage then have a good look for positives and faults then have a look at your cock birds see which ones can improve then place them one cock bird per show cage and put these cages next to the hen one at a time and study both birds then go with your instincts but if you can have a picture of the standard with you as well then it will help to look at that then the birds dont try and picture the standard all ways have one you can see its a lot easier
January 7, 200718 yr Author Many thanks for these tips Hath. Whilst I dont yet have any show cages, I can still try and do what you suggest. Failing that I have a mentor in the club who is happy to come and advise, so I will take him up on his offer of help. Your advice is much appreciated. A couple of my cockbirds are getting older, so I was just taking a chance on gettin a chick or two out fo them before retirement also. Those ones were from good bloodlines. January 7, 200718 yr a mentor is an even better way to do it and it is a good idea to keep lines going if you have purchased older birds
