Posted January 2, 200718 yr I just bought 2 new pairs of budgies and 3 young babies from the one pair. The male is banded 02 "2002" and its 2007 now....Is he to old to be breeding because I was planning on breeding him 2 or 3 more times than retire both of them. I just wanted to get a Spangle out of them. They had a spangle chick from this clutch, unfortunately I have to sell...I need to pay for the pairs....
January 2, 200718 yr Chances are he is only just over 4 yrs of age based on the way breeders use legrings. If it was a hen of that age I would retire her from breeding due to the age presenting more breeding problems than it is worth for the hen. But males can be bred a little longer. If he has not long ago raised a clutch, he needs a small "holiday" though as it takes a bit out of them feeding chicks and thinking of themselves last. Get him healthy and then try him. I know a show breeder who had a 6 yr old cock bird he adored and wanted chicks from. After a period of producing only clear eggs for 2 years with the hens, he went on a programme of dietary supplements and good care. He has produced 2 successful clutches since. So, it's down to his health. If he isnt in the best of condition right now, try not to be impatient for his chicks and get him really healthy first. You may be surprised.
January 2, 200718 yr Author No he will be 6 this year...the budgies here in Canada are banded with what year they were born in so he will be six this year.He has had a 1 month break...but Ill give him another few weeks of rest.
January 2, 200718 yr Actually.... he'll be 5. 2002-2007 If he was a late banding, he'll actually only be 4 until near the end of the year. Is there any way of contacting the breeder to find out an exact age?
January 2, 200718 yr Author (Laughing out loud) Im so bad at math! No I can't really because he had bought this pair from some one else...so it came from One Person to him from him to me...
January 2, 200718 yr On the tag there is a number that indicates the breeder I believe and you can contact them even if you didn't buy them directly from them. Am I correct in saying that?
January 3, 200718 yr There should be some other numbers on his band. Maybe if you let us know what they are, we can help work it out, or at least direct you to where you can find out.
January 3, 200718 yr Author Its late now...1 in the morning but Ill right down the band number tommorow...anyways I have to record my bands I have so many birds Im starting to forget D.O.B's & splits.
January 3, 200718 yr You ought to have a breeding register anyways. It's easy to misremember something. And that way you can give background info if you sell someone else a bird. Edited January 3, 200718 yr by Lisachromis
