Posted December 31, 200618 yr I have a Cinnamon Normal Hen.... I have been told her spots and mask are short because Cinnamons have shorter feathers. Her father was a Grey Green Dominant Pad and her mother was a Golden Opaline I seen one just like her somewhere on this forum. Indentical! My Cinnamon Grey is (6 months old) but her name is Anibelle....what should I breed anible to? What color? What sort of bird with what traits? This is her: http://i16.tinypic.com/47vbdd4.jpg Agian...don't mind the Skyblue in the front that is the male that is going after her! (Laughing out loud) http://i12.tinypic.com/43y6zvp.jpg This is was a picture of her when she was younger: http://i18.tinypic.com/29c5t0j.jpg As you can see her wings curls up like that...I found out that she broke it before and it was never treated in the flight by the breeder. That is why she was sold for a cheap price. Poor thing, SHE FLYS FINE THOUGH!!! its not broke anymore it just healed that way. She can still breed I think. Right? I know I can't put her in the show...but her off spring perhaps. I'm not planning on showing any budgies this year maybe next year. I'm just going to be entering a few tiels and see how they do. edited. pictures too large and have been changed to links Edited December 31, 200618 yr by Bubbles
December 31, 200618 yr what type of coloring are you looking in producing from a mating? Are you wanting more greys? looking for grey greens? wanting more cinnamon? or normals? size? What results do you want and that would help us better determine what type of budgie you should mate her with ? from what I have gathered in reading about showing budgies your normals are the most desired. If you go to the show section there is a wonderful article about what is desired as far as mutations
December 31, 200618 yr Author Well yes I would like a bigger size....bigger throat spots and some colors I want to get are some more Greys would be okay but I want Cobalts or Skyblues...Normal, Opaline, spangle doesn't matter....I don't care about the wing markings. Is there anyway some of the babies could be Grey and some could be Cobalt?Or Skyblue?
December 31, 200618 yr Grey matched with Blue will give a mix of both, whether they are cobalt or sky blue depends on what dark factors the parents have. (light green and sky blues have none, greens and cobalts have one and Mauve and olives have two) I know Opaline's are used to get bigger and more throat spots in the birds, and I know it works my babies from an Opaline mother all have bigger spots than the dad. I'm not a show breeder just from what I've read and been told by others. Can we see some more of the skyblue that is in the first picture. Read here ( http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....showtopic=12680 ) to understand more in what to look for when pairing birds.
January 1, 200718 yr Author No that skyblue is definately not show qaulity! (Laughing out loud) He is a half and half but still beautiful!
January 2, 200718 yr Author Well yeah I could try, Its so difficult here to get a breeder to sell you and Englisg budgie theere isn't many! About two or three good ones. If I offer them an outrageos price than they will sell...
January 2, 200718 yr I don't think it is the English that is hard to come by it is the good quality show English with the points and standards you are looking for in the show ring. We have Englishes that run for abot 35.00 US but if I was wanting a show standard English I am sure it would be in the hundreds. Joey have you joined a Budgie Club for Showing? I believe this is the best way to start gaining knowledge in what to look for, you can see shows in person and show budgies in person and more. Not that our forum is not great (Laughing out loud) but I know example Karen aka Bubbles is just starting her show breeding and to possibly show and she has joined a couple of Clubs.
January 2, 200718 yr Joining a show budgerigar club will also get you contacts to buy the birds you want. Try looking for your local club either by internet search or local newspaper, or perhaps your local budgie club is sponsored by a bird place that may be able to point you in the right direction.
January 2, 200718 yr Author I am part of a club...the Essex Kent Cage Bird Soceity It's a great place but if you belive it or not....there are only 3 or 5 ENGLISH BUDGIE breeders in teh club. Everyone is after Parrolets and Kakariki's... but this one breeder who I got my hen from has about 50 of them and the best around. He will not sell his though he sold me this one for cheap because of the wing it broke before and just healed this way. Thats what I found out not to long ago...but she can still breed. If I offer him high amounts of money he will sell me one I know he will.
January 3, 200718 yr There are lots of canary breeders in the club too. You know, if you're willing to pay the money for the bird, you might be able to travel to get one, or at least pay to have one shipped to you. That may offer you more choices. Another choice is to visit http://www.bfbsbirdclub.org/ (The Budgerigar and Foreign Bird Society) and see what they may suggest.
January 3, 200718 yr use a opaline but not a grey try to get one with a good head as the hen appears a little narrow (might just be the picture) but most opalines have good masks and spots
January 7, 200718 yr Author Yes I have been reasearching her haed is small..and her mask is short I know that. I read that you shouldn't breed Grey to a Grey it would deacrease the size of the bird and the Opaline brings in the big throat spots and nicely sized face. I have to watch out for flecking though right? What about a LIGHT GREEN OPALINE?
January 7, 200718 yr grey to grey wont reduce the size of chicks straight away it takes a while but it will give df greys which are undesirable as for light green opaline dont pick a colour before going and looking at what a breeder has to offer get the best you can afford
January 7, 200718 yr You will loss points using a flecked bird on the bench but saying that I have seen many win. Remember that to use a flecked bird you will need to keep good records of it's chicks. http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a26/darry.../GBS--4-357.jpg Here is a bird I am using. He is flecked. I have had 11 chicks from him. none are flecked but could be carring the gene. These will not be paired to any flecked birds or birds that have come from flecked parents. The chicks are very good. One came 2nd in it's class last show and will be put up on the bench in February. Edited January 7, 200718 yr by Daz
January 7, 200718 yr i would keep away from a flecked bird till your stud is formed then you can gamble on one and if the chicks are flecked dont use him again as a high percentage of chicks will be flecked and will pass the flecking on to their chicks father and son all chicks were clear from this cock bird and all their chicks clear as well i got him for half of what he was worth if he didnt have the flecking he came from a championship winning line
January 8, 200718 yr Hath have you heard if flecking is recessive or dominant? The Cock above sired 11 chicks all clean capped and most very good quality. I am interested if there is a line of thought in Brittan on the genetics involved with the flecking.
January 8, 200718 yr Author So even the slightest bit of flecking will do it? Edited January 8, 200718 yr by Bubbles
January 8, 200718 yr to me honest daz not sure i have had birds that are flecked and produce all flecked chicks and some like the photo that dont produce any
January 13, 200718 yr Joey, I think she's decided on the pepperoni pizza!~ :(Laughing out loud): ~~~ Kali P.S. I love her subtle coloring! Sorry I'm no help w/ the breeding issues. I definitely find all of it interesting! Edited January 18, 200718 yr by KaLiMaZu
January 18, 200718 yr Joey, I would pair the two up. I hope that opaline is a hen. Opaline sky cock to a cinnamon hen. Any normal hens produced if of good quality will be worth keeping. The cocks will be split to cinnamon and opaline.
