Posted December 30, 200618 yr okay my budgies live in a big outdoor cage. they share this cage with two quails ( a common and a King quail). But there is another that has moved in and built his/her home around every corner. He/she is a BIG, FAT, SCARY,DISCUSTING, HAIRY OLD SPIDER!! Im worried for my birds So my question is how to get rid of this gross creacher with out hurting my beloved pets? Edited December 30, 200618 yr by bugie-girl
December 30, 200618 yr Last time you told us about this spider was a month ago and we all told you you needed to get rid of it in case it was harmful to the budgies... ..surely it doesnt take a month to go out there with a sneaker and squash the offending spider. Please, do it for the budgies sake Edited December 30, 200618 yr by Bubbles
December 30, 200618 yr okay Sorry to dissapoint you but the spider is in under the roof of the cage ( in gaps of wire corners and roof corners), so i dont think id be able to sqeeze a sneaker back there! : Edited December 30, 200618 yr by bugie-girl

December 30, 200618 yr If this was me I would run an extension lead, take the vacuum into the aviary, attach the crevice attachment and suck that bugger up. I would then come out of the aviary, spray about a litre of insect spray into the vac bag, and finally, hand the vacuum to DH to empty. Problem solved! (Laughing out loud)! December 30, 200618 yr ive found that spiders show no threat to budgies and quail because they will tend to try and eat it especially the quail. but if it its a big spider then you should probably kill it, you can use a stick to kill it i find that works fine and if you wear a glove then if it runs out then you can squash it with out being bitten, Sco-tie
December 30, 200618 yr I hate to say it.... it's not politically correct...when I see a spider, big or small....I squeeeeeel and demand attention from one of my menfolk. Simply put they terrify me and I wouldn't stand for them by my babies, human or birds. :hap: :hap: :hap: Shell
December 31, 200618 yr When i see a spider in my aviary i get the hose and blast it with a jet of water and once it falls to the ground i continue hosing it at high power to drown it. That's the only way I can kill a spider myself - otherwise i get dad. :hap:
December 31, 200618 yr Depending on gow big your aviary is, shoo all birds down one end (away from spider corner) and give it a short spray (flyyspray). If done on a slightly windy day it should disperse any leftover spray so its not harmful to birds (don't do when birds are downwind) being outside and using a small amount shouldn't affect them. Yes I will probably get yelled at from everyone for suggesting this but it can be done safely. Bea's idea is good, hosing them annoys them and if it crawls out of the corner it can then be squashed Edited December 31, 200618 yr by the pie
December 31, 200618 yr It must be pretty easy for you guys but this is a web that is on ALL the top corners. It is a bit big, but for some one, ( i must confess ) who is even afraid of dead spiders, to kill the disgusting creature, is to challenging. ( P.S. Even my mum and dad have given up hope, and my sister? you should have seen when i hung a plastic spider in her room! she went wild!) ( P.P.S At least i'm not scared of plastic spiders!)
January 1, 200718 yr bea that isnt such a bad idea! but by the time its on the ground id be running away! it is preety big!
January 1, 200718 yr Ha Ha look out its Superspider!! Can you get a broom and try to get rid of the web then work out what part he's in? then spray/hose whatever him?] If I lived near you I would come around and try to help!!
January 1, 200718 yr Does your spider look like this? If so, it's a huntsman spider and they only eat insects and other invertebrates. I don't think they go after anything warm-blooded. I got the above image at: http://www.amonline.net.au/factSheets/huntsman_spiders.htm I would imagine having him around would keep the other insects away from your birds.
January 1, 200718 yr Good Grief! I am so glad the only spiders I have to be concerned with are black widows!!! YUK!!!! Featherhead1351
January 2, 200718 yr Pity you didn't live closed - my father is a great spider killer, we jump on the furniture & he jumps on the spider. Yesterday he killed a 25cm spider on our garage. Just as well I didn't see it as I'd probably be in a coma! : Get as long a stick as possible and pull the web down from each corner, you should then see where the spider is, with your really long stick ((Laughing out loud)) poke it until it runs and try & stab it (what I do). Or have someone ready with a flat blade shovel. Otherwise in the corners away from the wire squirt a little Surface Spray which will make the spider stay away. Every so often I remove all birds from the aviary, scrub the walls, wash em with vinegar & then spray surface spray over every surface, let it air for 2-3 days then put everything back. That keeps my spiders away (touch wood).
