Posted December 30, 200618 yr I was reading an article in one of my birdie mags the other day about sleep and how much continuous sleep birds need, (mine need more according to the article) and I was wondering how much continuously undisturbed sleep do your little fids get on an average night? The article is in the AACC (avicultural advancement council of Canada) Volume 29, issue #5 page 29, "SLEEP-HOW MUCH IS ENOUGH FOR A PARROT?" by Liz Wilson If anyone has it I’ll try to copy it for everyone
December 31, 200618 yr mine get at least 10-12 hours now because it get darker faster here in the US they are squawking to be covered by 6pm and they are uncovered by usually 8am.
December 31, 200618 yr :hap: Guess mine don't sleep enough then (although they snooze throughout the day) but then neither do I. I am usually up at 0515 and uncover them and don't get home until after 1630 and then I let everybody out and turn on the lights and it's play time! Generally try to get to bed by 2200 but they live in my living room so it's impossible. I tried to sleep in this morning (being Saturday here) but they started causing a commotion at 0700. :hap:
December 31, 200618 yr Can you try to cover them earlier with a dark cloth? The play time when you come home is really important and I know that they are in your living room, which is where you are, but that doesn't mena that they can't go to bed until you do. I pretty much live in my bedroom, it is my dining room and my living room and my birds are in here with me. I leave the lights on until around 8 - 8:30 pm and then I cover the birds with a dark cloth cover and turn out the main light. They settle down and get to sleep fairly quickly, even though my TV is still usually on and I use a lamp, it doesn't bother them.
February 20, 200718 yr I'm a night owl. Always have been. So I'm rarely in bed before 2 or 3 AM, and I usually don't wake up until noon. Since Scooter is in my bedroom, he's kind of become accustomed to my schedule. I dim the lights in my room by midnight and cover him up, but he rarely ever goes to sleep before I do. He just sits in his cage playing with his toys and softly chirping. He could sleep if he wanted, but he usually is making noise right up until I get in bed. It's probably a weird schedule for a bird, but he seems totally happy with it.
February 20, 200718 yr I am usually up before all the birds inside and leave them about 30minutes before I uncover them about 7am.Outside budgies must watch the sun come up as they are up usually before the sun and at the moment it is about 5:30am.
February 20, 200718 yr Mine wake and sleep with the sun at the moment that is around 6 pm and light around 5 - 5.30 am, They like to sing with the wild ones then and wake me up (and I'm sure the neighbors) I don't hear them unless they have a night fright or the damn neighbors cat bugs them like it did twice the other night.
February 20, 200718 yr Mine are the same as Nerwens really. Wake up about 6 or earlier and asleep by around 8pm. We have matchstick blinds that we roll down on the front of the aviary at night...keeps them quieter longer and also helps with "night frights" .
February 20, 200718 yr Mine would go to bed when the sun sets and rise when it does, but with winter here it would mean I'd rarely get to spend time with them if I let that happen. So I usually cover them about 8:30-9:00 pm year round. In summer they see the light peeking through the blinds and will wake up early while they are still covered, but in winter it doesn't get real light until after I'm gone to work. So right now I uncover them about 6:00-6:15 am, open the blinds, and change food and water in the semi-dark, LOL. I guess they get up as it gradually gets light. (By the way, I do NOT recommend anyone do that unless your birds don't mind your hands moving around when they can't see them very well.) I just try to let them sleep until they want to get up, so I don't turn on the light in the morning. I wish them good morning before I open the cage to change food and paper and tell them to go back to bed, I love them, and will see them later. And thankfully they just peek at me with one eye, give a chrip or two, and go back to sleep.
February 20, 200718 yr My guys get about 10hrs i guess. I cover them about 10-11pm and wake them up about 8am ish.
