Posted December 27, 200618 yr hi, im adrian and my budgie is jim, some of you know us... i got up today and jim is sick. i think hes had a stroke, his right foot will not grip and seems swollen. hes now sitting in the palm of my hand, fast asleep i think hes going to pass.......im crying so much as hes my best buddy, i cant stand the quiet here without him talking.
December 27, 200618 yr oh my it has been a while since you have been here but I remember Jim he looks like my Pretty. Can you call an ER vet to get him seen ASAP, there is always hope. Hugs to you .
December 27, 200618 yr Author i cant get to a vet, closest one to look at him would be 60mile round trip.and i dont have transport. any ideas what it could be
December 27, 200618 yr oh, Welshman, my heart goes out to you. I don't have the words to say to you right now. I sure hope that he gets through.
December 27, 200618 yr it sounds like he has a foot infection or bumblefoot (but not seeing it or being a registered vet I can't be for sure). With it being hot that would indicate infection (not a stroke) and most likely he has a fever. Here is a description of Bumblefoot does this sound like it could be it? http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index.php?showtopic=5915 It is your call but it would be worth taking him into the nearest vet you can.
December 27, 200618 yr Author there are no marks on his foot, just looks swollen a bit. im going to get him to the vets now somehow now
December 27, 200618 yr Your bird seem to be showing the signs of a possible broken leg or foot. Is it possible he has caught or wrenched it's foot in the cage somewhere ? If it were a stroke, I doubt there would be obvious swelling of the foot. The fact they he is sleeping in your hand seems to indicate that he is in pain. Of course, the other possibilities that Lovey has mentioned could also be whats happening here. Budgies in shock and pain will lose body temp rapidly. If you can find a lamp and put outside the cage so that it keeps an area of the cage warm (25 watt globe is sufficient) with an area he can move to if he gets too warm ....and cover 3 sides of the cage with a cloth, then that is a makeshift hospital cage for now. perhaps pad the bottom of the cage with a folded towel and have the water and food on the floor of the cage. In the absence of a vet visit, is there anyone near you that raises birds (i.e. breeder ) that may be able to recognize if this is a broken leg ? Of course a vet visit is recommended, but failing that, the advice offered here so far should help in the meantime. Let us know how it goes and all the best............Karen
December 27, 200618 yr I remember Jim, he is "very" special! I agree with Bubbles, it does sound like a foot injury of some sort, hope you can manage to get him to a vet asap and good luck to you and Jim. :ygbudgie:
December 27, 200618 yr Author im just back from the vet, luckily the closest vet had a nurse in today who specializes in birds, she said it could be septic arthritis, no sign of breaks. he had an antibio injection, i couldnt watch!!! also got antibio for a week now. keeping him warm for as long as it takes now, here he is getting some love http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v677/welshade/DSC01014.jpg Edited December 27, 200618 yr by daz
December 27, 200618 yr That's great that Jim got medical attention, I bet both you and him feel a WHOLE lot better! He's looking pretty chipper in your picture, keep up with the antibiotics! :hap:
December 27, 200618 yr claps - that is great Adrian - now we will keep Jim in our prayers he is a special boy
December 27, 200618 yr And do visit the forum every so often as we have missed Jim's antics and talking. :hap:
December 27, 200618 yr Author im going to, its been a hectic year for the wife and i, we are having a baby. but jim is still my baby. i will be so glad when i hear him talk again, its so quiet here in the living room, he had just mastered "wot you doing".
December 27, 200618 yr Author Do you think i should ho;d him through the night?? hes been in my hand all day and he cant balance on a perch, maybe i should lay a towel in the cage?? allthough i dont mind holding him through the night.
December 27, 200618 yr I would put him on a towel for sure, holding him all night maybe too much for you and you need sleep too.
December 27, 200618 yr Author i can go without, i want to make sure he is comfortable, i tried the towel ealier but he wouldnt stay, wanted to be with me,hes been in my hand all day , he did an incredible poo just now too, the biggest ive ever seen!!
December 27, 200618 yr You do what you feel is best, my concern is you may fall asleep and he could be injured more. Maybe put him next to you instead and then hold him when you can . Keep us updated on this little guy.
December 27, 200618 yr I would stay with him if you can. If nothing else it'll give you some special time together. It sounds like you both need it!
December 28, 200618 yr Author hi everyone, jim is a bit better today,he still is having problems balancing but he is eating more, i kept him in my hand until about 4am then i placed him in his cage and he managed to perch. ive given him his antibio this morning but its hard to get the syrine in his mouth.
December 28, 200618 yr I am glad to hear he is better. Temporary you could remove the perches so he doesn't have to bend his foot for the next couple days and see if that helps him feel more comfortable.
