Posted December 23, 200618 yr Just about 10 minutes ago I got Hovey out for a training session. It was great! She sat on my arm without flying off (she's not clipped) for the whole 30 minutes and ate millet from my other hand for the last 5 minutes. I've had Hovey for almost half a year and all she did since then would bite and run away from me. It's seemed like forever but I finally got somewhere. She didn't even mind when I moved out into the living room and sat down to watch T.V. I'm gonna keep working with her. I'll keep you posted!
December 23, 200618 yr Sounds like you have won her trust. What a lovely Christmas present :budgiedance:
December 30, 200618 yr Author Yeah, that'll be the best preasent so far I'm getting a lot bigger cage (Hovey's is rather small unfortunatley) and a blue budgie soon though right now she's hopping between my hands while I type it's soo funny! But she's only nice outside her cage...inside she thinks she's dominant I'm gonna keep working with her I'll post if anything really 'bondish' happens
January 1, 200718 yr Author Indeed it is. I went to a friends house this weekend and my parents forgot to feed her!!!! She's sitting in my hand eating right now though she's okay. It's amazing how such a small animal makes those big messes EDIT: I was just getting food for her bowl (I've been feeding her out of my hand since 9 o'clock. She flew up into my room where I keep the food. I didn't even notice her then I hear this big THWAP sound...I look over and she's staring at my window like "what just happened?!!?" She's not hurt though... Edited January 1, 200718 yr by firesnake001
January 1, 200718 yr Yikes! Keep an eye on her, sometimes the effects of crashing into something don't show until hours after it happens. Hopefully she's okay though. I use window blinds on every window because they can let in light and still block the actual window from the birds. That might work with you too, for rooms that your budgie frequents. Maybe your parents would be up for it. If not, just draw the curtains so she doesn't get tempted to fly for the window. Make sure you establish a strong bond before adding another budgie. I would hate to see all your hard work go to waste if you add a new bird too soon. Also remember that new budgies must be quarantined in a separate cage and separate room. During that time (at least 30 days) you can work on taming and bonding with the new bird. This ensures that you'll still be a part of the flock once the two birds are introduced. But she's only nice outside her cage...inside she thinks she's dominant Budgies don't throw dominance around the way other animals do. This is up for debate, but no matter what belief you subscribe to, the behavior you just described is related to the budgie being territorial over her cage. She's defending her space from an intruder (you, in this case). You can curb this by rearranging her toys and perches weekly. It may not stop the problem completely, but it can definitely help. I like to completely redo my cages and rotate toys quite often and so far, I haven't had too much of a problem with territorial birds.
January 3, 200718 yr Author Thanks Eterri I would definately close my curtains if I had any I've tacked up a towel right now but I donm't have enough tacks for the other window... I heard you were supposed to change everything around but I didn't know how often. I had only been doing once a month I'll start to do that more often now  Well...I just got home and have about 3hrs worth of homework so I'll check back later. ~FireSnake
