Posted December 11, 200618 yr :ausb: Hi guys, i'm new. I joined this forum last week, and i've been reading up, this forum is GREAT I acquired a blue budgie about a month ago, i found him while out walking my dog, and despite many found notices, nobody claimed him, so we've kept him. unfortunately he has a twisted beak, and i was wondering what i can do about it. here are some pics of him, to show you his beak http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h225/thu...yof100_1469.jpg http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h225/thu...yof100_1462.jpg By The Way, his name is Twist  The pics didn't some up...hmmm Edited December 11, 200618 yr by Bea
December 11, 200618 yr The poor man. The best thing to do is take him to an avain vet to see if some beak trimming can help the problem. I'm glad you found him. I take it he can eat seed and other thing well.
December 11, 200618 yr How wonderful that you found him and welcome to our forums. He looks very much like my Merlin :ausb:, even the throat spots. I agree to take him to an registered avian vet, if you need help locating one in your area let us know we will be happy to help. How does he eat for you? Is he able to eat normally and crack seed, have you tried veggies? I ask to see if he has adapted to this disability, he looks healthy and of a normal weight but that is pictures, reality could be different.
December 11, 200618 yr Nerwen and Lovey have given you good advice. I just want to check that you've removed the second picture? I changed both to links as they are over the board image size limit.
December 11, 200618 yr Well he's only little. But he does eat well, but only the smaller sized seeds, he can't seem to manage to bigger ones. He was looking really skinny when i first found him, and i expect it's the millet sprays that put the weight back on. Oh Thanks Bea, sorry about that, i'll remember to resize them a bit smaller next time. I'm not sure that there are any avian vets in Townsville. I will try and find out, but i don't think so. ETA: i put veges in his cage for him, and offer them on my hand to, but he's a bit hesitant to try them Edited December 11, 200618 yr by Thunder
December 11, 200618 yr you may want to chop up the veggies and make them very small and almost much and then add the seed he can eat with it. You can sprinkle it on top instead of mixing it so he can find it faster. Eating the seed he will also get a taste of the veggies which may encourage him to eat them. It may take a couple week or month or more each budgie is different. Millet probably did put on the weight and that is okay, he probably needed it. Even adding millet to the mix will help him start to try different things. I am sure someone here in AU can help you out finding a avian vet.
December 11, 200618 yr Thanks Lovey, off to chop up frut and veges Oh By The Way , Your Merlin is gorgeous :ausb:
December 11, 200618 yr Oh thank you that was his younger picture now he is older with more throat spots. I would say yours is a normal violet coloration :ausb:.

December 11, 200618 yr Thanks Karen I just found out that my vet (Aachilpa) is an Avian vet too :bluebudgie: So i'll try and book him in this week
December 11, 200618 yr Good luck with your sweet bird and I see Karen has kindly given you a link to an avian vet in your area so you are set. :bluebudgie:
December 11, 200618 yr your budgie is a sweetie , glad he found you . l'm glad you are looking after him so well and that you are going to take him to the vet :bluebudgie: please keep us updated on you sweet little fellow .
December 11, 200618 yr Thats so good to hear!! He is such a handsome little fellow and I am very glad you found each other!! :bluebudgie:
December 11, 200618 yr I hope all goes well :bluebudgie: The beak may need constant triming all his life to keep in good shape or it may only be for a while until it starts to grow correctly. The vet should help work that out. He is an older bird and if this is the first time with veggies and fruit it could take a long time for him to try it. So only offer tiny amounts each day.
December 11, 200618 yr Twist is an extremely handsome budgie. I am pleased that he found his way to someone who was interested in looking after him properly. Well done.
December 11, 200618 yr Thanks guys, i'll let you know how the vet visit goes. He's such a happy, chirpy little fellow, and we have his cage next to the window, so that he can talk to all the wild budgies that live on the front yard (it's very noisy in th e mornings at our house) :bluebudgie:

It is heartwarming to hear you found this bird and are going to give him a loving home. I would love to see out your window in the mornings! An actual flock of wild budgies is a thing not too many of us will ever see. Do you think you could take a few pictures one day and post them up? I'd love to see them! How many are in the flock that visits your yard?
