English Vs. American Keets

Hello Again.

I know, it has been a while since I have posted. Sorry about that, many things going on! Anyway, I have a question maybe someone could answer for me. I have had much success in breeding the 'standard' american budgie with no problems in getting a pair to bond and lay eggs. Recently, and with much effort, I was able to locate a male and female english budgie who I would like to breed. (both are 18months plus). The problem is, they don't even look the least bit interested in each other. Actually, they aren't really interested in much at all. Do they eventually come around? Or are they the 'blonds' of the parakeet world? Just a question :)

I'm sure they will breed. Make sure both are in condition from breeding (dark blue and dark brown cere) and give them the time to bond.

Hi Wendy

Yes show birds can be annoying. They are difficult to breed but I think they are worth the effort.

You'll have to wait till the hen is in breeding condition. The cer should be turning from dull to light brown. If it is dark brown it's too late.

Heya

Also would like to add , have you had them seperated for a few days . I find that putting the cock bird on his own for a while can get him so frustrated that he will try to "bond" etc when the hen is introduced , fires him up so to speak :P

I've never had luck with the english ones either. The ozzy ones no problems at all!

Yes Daz,

Her cere is a light brown, not dark.....they are just funny keets to me. So beautiful but seem not to be interested in much. I hope with a little patience, they will at least investigate the box. Time will tell! :P

Here are their pictures....

Thunder, my hen. (this was taken just as her cere was starting to go tan)

And Hercules, my male. Isn't he cute?!

I hope they will get together. I know nothing as of yet as to genetics but hopefully they will make pretty babies!

Wendy

Hercules kind of looks female to me.. but it's hard to tell from the picture.

That picture is not great of Hercules, he is definitely male. Thanks for your input though!

Well I have to say I believe my Merlin has more brains then my Pretty (the American version) (Laughing out loud) but they are not breeding. Pretty birds and I agree he looks male on my screen. Good luck!
