Scary Morning

Today I was awoken by family tell me my birds where loose. I freaked thinking they meant the ones outside and my mind was racing on how I was going to get them. But it turned out (thankfully sort of) that it was the ones inside the house. Two of the four still in the sale cage had gotten out sometime over the night and were now fling around maddly in the garage where the cage is. My cat was trying to get through the screen door to them and the man hole for the roof was open!!!!!!!!!!!

A small door on the side of the cage was left open, the scary thing is I don't remember useing that door in the last two days! and the garage had been open for some breese. Going to the cage to shut it Cupid almost joined the others in the fly around.

After only a 3-5 minutes I was able to get one and put her back in the cage. Yet the last ( I think it was Opal, I didn't think to check leg rings when putting them back) one kept flying around and around and around ecaping me and the towel I had trying to catch her with. I was worried she was going to find the man hole any second. Finally my father got her in a lace table coth.

Both were stress and panting alot but after 10 -15 minutes had calmed down and having a nap after that morning workout.

I don't want that to happen again any time soon :D

:D Doesn't sound like a good start to the day, glad it all worked out okay. :greenb:

OH MY Nerwen I am so glad everything worked out okay. When those things happen I go into panic mode.

No it wasn't a good start. After it was all over with I remembered that Marine (their dad) also got out of the cage one night and was flying all around the house, he wasn't spotted on top of the fridge until AFTER the door out side was opened. That was a scary time too. As you can see I can do silly things like leave doors open when I think they are shut. One reason I have the avairy padlocked, I don't leave that door until I know that lock is closed.

Im so glad to hear you got them all coralled and back into their cage. thank goodness they didnt find any of the ways out. thats a good thing they didnt excape earlier with the garage door open!!!

I had a similar experience moving a chick from the nursary to the Stock cage. I have a soft net always at the ready.

I'm so pleased you managed to get them both. We had one on the loose the other day when transferring our new budgies to the quarantine cage. Thankfully I insisted on doing it in the bathroom just in case this happened.

Unfortunately, it can happen to anyone.

Fortunately happy endings like yours can also happen.

I lost my old friend - a lutino budgie a long time ago due to an open balcony door. I was away, and the bird was loose in the room (with that only bird I never actually locked the cage - she also knew how to open it with a little bit of human help - she was so smart). My mom came home and opened the balcony door to air the room. I don't know what she was thinking about, it was December, freezing! When I came home and realised that the door was left open and I had lost my bird! I rushed outside to search for it in the snow. It was dark, the snowdrifts were deep. I still cannot understand how the bird could fly in such temperature - I couldn't find any track of her in the vicinity. :ausb:

yes it was lucky they didn't get out. I can't say for sure when the door opened but I don't remember using that door to the cage yesterday or the day before.

Daz- I've been waiting about 3-4 months for a net to be made for me with some netting I brought. It was my second thought this morning "I wish I had that net" then I got to work on finding other ways on getting them.

Nerwen I have a butterfly net that I use. It was only a couple of dollars from one of those cheap shops like overflow or something. They always seem to have them. Might be worth a look.

HA I've looked there and they didn't had any that is when I got the netting.

Wow....you gotta know how lucky you were that it wasn't any worse. :hap: But it has happened to all of us at one time or another. Do you have a door on the cage that a smart budgie can open by itself ?
