Question about eacalyptus leaves

hi everyone

this may seem a silly question, as i live in australia i was wondering if it was okay to give budgies eucalyptus leaves. Is there different varieties that are bad ect?

Also if it is okay should i wash them or anything else before i give them to my budgies. I realise that in the wild that they would eat them its just that i have heard conflicting information about giving them to domesticated budgies. thanks :o

While I was searching for budgie toys one day on the internet, I came across a eucalyptus toy. They also had an article that said that in the wild, in the outback, they lived off of eucalyptus for hundreds of years, and although they will eat fruits and veggies, none of them are native to Australia. I'm sure that leaves are fine. If you want, I can give you the url to the website that I read that from.

Here it is: http://www.budgieworld.net/budgie_advice.htm and it also has a link on the website that talks about eucalyptus leaves, and it says that they should always be put in your budgies' cage.

Oops i just realised i spelt eucalyptus wrong :(Laughing out loud):

That's okay. It's a tricky word to spell. :)

wat eucalyptus strain / specie is it that we need to give the budgie?

thanks

I give my budgies eucalypt leaves. Don't know what species or anything. I just pick tham off the tree in the backyard and wash them first. My budgies love them!!

Merlin strips the leaves :(Laughing out loud): He LOVE LOVE LOVES them!!! The bird behaviourist we saw said that the type doesnt matter.

:P Crikey

Now get out the way you cuddly koala

Mine eat leaves off the gum nut tree it flowers in bright red flowers and parrots, rosella, Hommer, and my budgies just love em

I put a branch in there and they just go crazy over it

So as the sun goes down over the Blue Mountains it?s not uncommon to see a rare Hommer pulling branches off the tree

Doh there goes another Koala

well interesting, I would never have thought to offer them to my birds. The only reason I am thinking about do so now is because others have stated they have done so. Just remember there is no one to stop lies and incorrect info to be put up on websites.

Also these leave are poisonous, they would certainly make us sick, and it?s hard work even for the Koala to eat them. So I would caution the over use of them.

so nerwen.. u sayin not all eucaluptis strains are good for them ?

damn... keep gettin mixed answers on this eucaliptis trees :S

I think he was saying not to feed them too often.

i thought they used to live off them mainly in the Austrialian wild...

and is VERY good for them.

wild budgies do eat seeds but they also supplement their diet when they need to with eucalyptus leaves.

i just recently found that website selling eucalyptus toys and budgie butter! anyone tried it? it sounds good

I have heard of eucalyptus toys but not budgie butter.....what exactly is butter???

http://www.budgieworld.net/budgie_products.htm

go here bea! there is a whole bunch of toys made from eucalyptus! just wondering if anyones budgies like em or not, if they are good then i will order some!

I haven't bought one of those but they look like they would provide a lot of entertainment!!! Only thing is, if your budgie chews through perches and things i really don't think those toys would last long. :) I also wouldn't pay for the perches (they're just ordinary sticks) or the gum leaves. There are other type of leaves which could be found locally at no cost. :D

there arent many trees near me! i live in suburban uk, the vegetation isnt very exciting!

i already have branches in my cage so i wouldnt buy the perches :) i thought that the gum nut toys looked so cool though! my two would have a ball chewing through them! makes a refreshing change from plastic toys.

i wasnt sure whether the budgie butter would be any good though, i dont know if they would like it if i started covering their carrots in slimey green stuff!

Hmmm....it wouldn't be very nice not having loads of trees around. I like trees. Yeah, i reckon your birds would love chewing the wooden toys. But are the toys expensive? You don't want to spend loads only to have your birds destroy them in a week or so.

thats true bea...i think you can get a set of two for $25, whatever that is in sterling? (Laughing out loud) i will check how much something similar is in the petshop and compare

and yeah, not many trees, lots of fields though! there is an old oak tree at the bottom of my garden but it looks kinda manky (Laughing out loud) :(Laughing out loud):
