Posted December 4, 200618 yr Does anyone have any ideas??? I have placed three pairs into separate breeding cages as of 23/11, all have bonded and all hens are showing interest in nesting boxes, they have 3/4 seed to 1/4 pellet mix, fresh water daily, greens daily calcim and iodine bell, as well as budgie starter. One pair get on really well and judging by their behaviour their maybe eggs soon. However when observing the other two pairs, I have noticed that females are friendly and preen each other, the males feed the females, head bobbing, singing etc. But as soon as they try to mate the females start to attack the males legs. The males have not sustained any injuries yet!! Is this normal??
December 4, 200618 yr It sounds normal. He will keep trying until she gives in & lets him. She sounds unexperienced. She will get in the "mood" soon
December 5, 200618 yr Yes sometimes the males can be strong headed at the start and the hen if not ready will tell them off. Just keep a close eye on them as you have and be sure to check on them if you think the male has some injuries.
December 5, 200618 yr Hi, My birds are not set up for breeding, but I have three pairs in one big cage and the boys frequently get the idea that its time to mate. They try and try but the girls just nip at them and sidestep their advances. they do all the other stuff that bonded pairs do but it is funny to watch them in the Non-mating dance! It reminds me of highschool!!
