Too Many To Tame?

:D Hi,

I love each and every one of my budgies individually for different reasons. They are all so pretty and so different. The problem is that with them all in my new big cage, they are happier to be together, but I don't think I can really tame any of them! It's okay for now I love them whether they are tame or not. I plan to breed them next summer and I will have their babies to tame from the beginning. I will only keep two babies out of however many we have, and those two will be my special friends and I will keep them separated from the main flock. But isn't it just mesmerizing to watch them in all their colors and personalities just flying around being birds? I just love them. They have a unique way of climbing straight into my heart without even trying. That's all, I just wanted to express the wonderment of budgies!!! :) :feedbirds:

I totally know where you are coming from. I can watch my guys for hours. I think people laugh at me when I explain who is with who and their funny little ways, their cute little games they play..........it's a sea of colour in a budgie playground ! :)

Very true! My favorite sight in the world is a bird being a bird. There's nothing more carefree, beautiful and happy than that. :)

I agree I love watching my 2 all the time. They are so cute and awesome.

 That's why my dining room, which is part of the living room has been deemed the bird room, my guys live with me and the computer is between them and the living room furniture so I usually have a bird on me when I am on the computer and the couch and loveseat have washable covers on them. Of course, most of my friends think it is a waste of space but I have a big kitchen that can seat 6 for dinner so that's good enough for me! My birds rule! :)

My friend and i were lying on the lounges in the living room the other day just watching Blinkie and Ozzie running around being birds. She commented on how funny they are and that you could sit amused watching them for hours - and she's not a bird person! :) It is really cool watching two budgies interact the way they're supposed to.

You can tame them all. At one time I had 11 that were tame...well 10 were and the 11th followed the flock, LOL. They were flighted as well. It just takes time. But be aware that the flock mentality will be strong, and that you can make that work in your favor instead of against it. :D But it can be done.

And I love to watch birds be birds too. There is not much that is better.

I am working on them. Yesterday, I just opened up the cage door and watched them. I have one girl, Sherby who is the most tame. Shadow is her mate. Shadow just hung out on the door, but Sherby actually came out. Her wings are clipped so once she got down, she couldn't get back up and after I followed her around for a while, she finally gave in and stepped up for me so I could take her back to the cage. :D Eventually they will all realize that I am not so scary. I'll just keep working on Sherby till Shadow starts getting the idea. Shadow is the main boss of the flock. Once he starts getting tame I think the rest will be okay.

All it takes is for one bird to look like they are having a good time with you...then eventually the rest will not be happy with one bird having all the fun. LOL. Good ole' budgie jealousy. :D I think you will have some success, especially since Sherby is clipped. That really does help in your gaining their trust. They may not all be cuddly, but I have no doubt you can get them all to a level of tameness that you are happy with. It is a wonderful feeling, to be included in the flock.

One thing I can recommend though, is to get them used to coming out of the cage on your finger instead of always letting them come out on their own. That has the added benefit of whenever you have to put your hands in the cage, to change food, water, rehang a toy, etc. they won't get upset when your hand is in there, as they will be used to it.

Totally agree with the last statement. I always take my birds out of the cage. Merlin get right on..Pretty well lets say he is stinky at time but mine are never afraid in of my hand in the cage. :)

Thank you Rainbow, that is a great bit of advise!! I hadn't thought of that.

Hello budgie people!

You have given me so much hope with your wonderful stories! :) I have got only two budgies, but they are not tame. And yes, I just love to watch them. But it would be nice to have them trust me. They have been with us for a month and a half. I guess it will all come!

I always get into trouble because I spend too much time cleaning my cages. I don't spend all that time cleaning! Half the time I spend watching and talking to the birds.

One thing that is always special to me when I'm in the aviary is a non tame bird will come up to me to play with my hair or nibble my nose. :(Laughing out loud):
