Pine Cones And Kale

Featured Replies

I have read several posts about pine wood now, but still haven't got an answer to the question as to whether it is safe or unsafe to give the birds a pine cone to play with. They are everywhere where I live and I know that pine nuts are good.

On another subject... I am celebrating the success of another veggie! My birds are beciming so accepting of any food I offer them. I put a bunch of kale in their treat dish last night and they attacked it immediatly. They love it! It makes me so happy to give them such good and healthy foods. Thanks to this site and a few others, I know that I can do all the right things to keep my flock healthy and happy for years to come.

Kale is great for them and all my birds (aside from my picky eclectus) love it. It's the first veggie I started my budgies on and they dug right in! Congrats. :D

same here Terri that was the first thing Pretty tried.

mine are all rice addicts....hmm hope thats okay

Boiled rice

For budgies and other bird species, boiled rice is a tasteful and easy to digest source of protein. It should never be salted, because salt could cause serious damage to a bird's organism! The next time boil rice, leave out the salt, you can salt your helping when it's on your plate. Boiled without salt, you can give small quantities of rice to your pet birds.

It is important to wash to rice before serving so that the grains do not stick together too strongly. Budgies usually don't like sticky food, but once they are used to boiled rice, they will love it.

Rice should always be fed as an additional food. Never give boiled rice to breeding budgies. Otherwise the parents will gorge their chicks on the big rice grains that have only little nutritional value. Consequently, the chicks will starve or suffer from a lack of minerals and vitamins. You should never risk that!

can I ask what Kale is please? I've heard it alot, but when I do a search for it, they say that it is a group of veggies which includes brocolli, cauliflower etc etc... what you guys mentioned Kale, do you mean a specific type of veg? or just a general group of veg? if it's a specific type of veg, does it have another common name for it? Thanks. :D

Here you go. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kale :D Kale is like cabbage, dark green (which means healthy!) and leafy. :D

hmmm interesting... is the top right picture in the link the Kale that you're talking about? the lacey looking leafy veg?

You know, I don't even recall seeing anything like that here in the shop!! umm members from Australia.. are they available here? anyone here use them? I have heard a lot of good thing about it, so would love to give it to my flocks. :D If I can get my hands on some.. hehe

Edit... I just look around on images search.. and those flowering cabbages/kale, are they the same as what you are talking about? you know they are pink or white in the middle? I think I've seen those around, but not very often though.
