Posted November 25, 200618 yr Hi all, I took Buzby to the vets today to get his claws clipped for the seasonal holiday, and the vet seemed to have noticed that he has a slow growing fatty lump in his belly, but weren't really forthcoming with information about it, and said that they don't recommend ops as he would probably not survive it. I can't say that I really noticed it on him before, as when he is on my hand ans stroke him, I don't feel nothing lumpy though, except that his belly looks a little big, not much (but I look the same though around that area...(Laughing out loud)) and also back in september when I had him checked over after being on a course of baytrill for his foot problem, the vet did not notice nothing then or when I took him june to get his medicine, the emergency vet or the normal hours vet did not say nothing then I took him, and he looks no differnt then, till now really. Anyway I came on here and noticed something about lipoma, and that dieting can help. His diet is mostly seed, and reading now, what fruit would be good for him, as I have red Galla apples and have thought many times about giving him some, but afraid it would harm him. What fruit can you recommend, and would these type of apples be okay, as to be honest, he is his normal, healthy, chirping self, with a big appetite for his food and as playful as ever. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
November 25, 200618 yr Veggie are actually a better choice then fruit (which is more of a treat and can cause runny poos). I would suggest going to www.budgietalk.com this is a member's information site (eterri) and she has excellent tips on feedings. I welcome you and I know you will receive some excellent advice.
November 25, 200618 yr I have two budgies with lipomas, they live in the same cage and one of them is fairly old. Being heavy and fluffier, they are not very good flyers and I am always scooping them off the floor. They like their bok chok, romaine lettuce and brocolli the best and will eat pellets mixed with their treat food every few days. They look really fat but it is due to their condition and they eat no more food than the rest of the birds. Otherwise, they are happy and healthy and on meds. :rip: Oh, and hello there, you will get a lot of great info here, I know I have.
November 25, 200618 yr Hello and welcome to the forum ,you will love all the kind words and help. I recently took some new budgies to the avian vet,and found that they were over weight. This is because of being feed mostly seed. The vet said that seed diet is like feeding your kids only cake. It is very important to give your birds a varied diet of fresh veg, fruit and grains.Sprouted seed is more nutritious. Never give birds onion, avocado or rhubarb. It has taken some of my other budgies months to convert to this new way of eating but all are happy and well.Apples are good but dont let them eat the pips, they are toxic. November 25, 200618 yr My guys didn't know about veggies till I got them and it has taken a little time for them to get used to the idea, but now they jump on anything I put in their veggie bowl. The first veggie that they really fell for was Romain lettuce and then raw baby spinach. Now they will eat almost anything I give them! It is very satisfying to watch them learn to love food that is so good for them. Loving budgies is a neverending learning experience isn't it? What great fun! Good luck with your bird kid. Sending good vibes. Shell
