hey all. I have had a **** afternoon!! I went out to take pics of my gorgeous budgies when to my shock Ice had absolutley no feathers on top of his head and blood had stained his white feathers. He and his partner Candy have eggs in a nest box in the aviary. I took him out and bathed his head in antiseptic solution and to my horror the wound went all the way to his tiny skull. I took him to the vet right away along with Candy because I noticed she had a few feathers missing from her head too. I am such a sook I cried nearly the whole time at the vets. The poor Vet must have thought I was a real fruitloop. Anyway she told me he would need surgery and it would cost $260 and she said that he wasn't guarateed to pull through. I was devasted but she then said how she was looking for a pet budgie and if it was okay with me she would do the operation herself and keep him as a pet afterwards, if he was lucky enough to pull through. It was a tough decision to make but I left him there knowing she would take great care of him and do what she thought was best. I think she is a great caring and compassionate woman and I thank her very much.

 

All the way home I was trying to think of a way to cover the aviary to protect my babies from the wild birds.

 

When I came home I thought I would return Candy to her eggs when I found out exactly what happened. As soon as Candy flew to her nest box Parsley flew in after her and started to attack her. I think Ice was injured trying to save Candy from being attacked. He was trying to save his lady. A true little hero.

 

I took Candy from the aviary along with her nest box and put her in a separate cage. I don't know what to do with her now tho. But what should I do with Parsley, I don't want her to attack any other birds. Should I put her and her partner in a seperate cage with a nest box and put Candy back into the aviary so she is not alone? What a nasty little Parsley.

It's best to move the trouble maker fromt he group so her anger doesn't get turned onto another one now that your removed candy.

 

I'm not sure about adding her back or not, left alone in the single cage I think you could keep a better eye on her and the eggs/bubs to make sure she is handling the raising of them. but if you know you would get a 'foster' dad to step up to the plate in the avairy it might be better to add her back.

 

Sorry if that is a bit wishy washy but you are the one that knows your birds best.

 

I hope little Ice makes it through and has a ball in his new home.

Oh boy I am speechless only that I hope all turns out okay. Is the vet going to call you and update you on everything?

 

As for next time you may want to consider closed breeding vs aviary and that would eliminate any interference.

I have had similar problems in the past, although not quite so drastic . I have found it works best to seperate the trouble maker/s into their own cage. Some budgies are just too bossy for their own good! Good luck with your little one and babes I hope it all works out.

Thanks guys! The Vet said I would have to completely surrender Ice to her. I could probably ring and find out what happened but I just want to think that he has gone to a good home and someone who will care for and love him just like I did. As for Candy I moved her into my other aviary and naughty parsley and her partner are going into a breeding box as we speak because that is what caused the problem in the first place. So I will keep you all updated on My naughty budgie and poor little Candy.

That's too bad things worked out that way but at least you know that Ice witll be well taken care of.

I might sound evil but id be taking the nesting box out so that Parsely doesnt have the chance to get in there either... Ive had situations like this but not as bad, I take the trouble maker out of the aviary and put them into one of my smaller cages.. they pretty soon take a hint

I GOT THE BEST NEWS!!!!! IT MADE MY DAY!!!!

 

Well it has been a while since the accident with Ice happened but out of the blue the vet called today to tell me how little Ice is getting on. She told me that she thought they lost him on the operating table because he took a long time to come to. He was very sorry for himself for a couple of days and the anti-biotic injections twice a day were making him very grumpy!! Slowly he started eating normally and he even escaped from his cage and took off around the room a couple of times making all the staff chase him!! The wound came open a couple of times and she had to 'glue' him back together. She said he now looks like a monk!!!! His feathers will not grow back on his head and he will be a little baldy for the rest of his life. So all in all budgies are a little more resilient at times than we all think.

 

Anyway a vet assistant has given Ice to her younger brother who desperately wanted a bird for christmas. He renamed him Sam and wants to get him a friend when he recovers a bit more. He still has a check up a few times a week. I'm thinking of offering Candy to him since they were already bonded. I'll see if the vet thinks this would be a good idea. So I am really happy that the vet called and let me know what happened. I would highly recommend her to anyone in my area. She is a lovely caring lady who cared for me (i'm such a sook when it comes to sick animals) and my bird.

 

Did I say made my day? I think it made my year!!!!!!!

Oh wow... what an adventure!! That must have been so tough for you... I get really attached to my animals too and I know how tough it is to decide what treatment they should get and when its time to let them go. You did the right thing.

 

I'm glad Ice made it through with flying colors. It is amazing how strong and resilient the little guys can be. I'm sure that he'll be happy in his new home and he very well might like to have Candy back with him (and she probably will like it too).
