Adalard, Balding Budgie

Featured Replies

Posted

I had Adalard, my daughter's budgie, playing with my budgies today, and, as he is the reason that I started to keep budgies, I figured I would introduce him.

As I mentioned in my flocks intro, Adalard is a male albino with balding problems. I used to keep him with my babies until he started having flight problems, when I figured it would be better if he was in a smaller cage. He has such fun with everyone else that maybe I should commission Daniel to make a ladder like Trooper's :D

This is Adalard from the top....

you can see how sparse the flight feathers are

Eek, poor Adalard. Has he seen an avian vet? He doesn't look well at all. :D Hard to tell, but it even looks like scaley face around the cere area... poor thing.

I was going to say it looked like scaly face too.

Love the last picture.

I would agree with the scaly face :D get him to an avian vet for treatment, a PM to bubbles could help for some names. This is contagious so treating all the birds would need to be done if it is in fact scaly face.

totally agree it looks really bad in the second picture and because he was playing with the other birds they should all be treated.

Scaley face is a mite but the mite spray you have been using doesn't treat this type of mite. It burrows into the cere of the bird and makes tunnels. If you look at his cere closely you may be able to see the holes. Don't treat on your own take him to the avian vet asap and let them know too that he was around other birds.

no, he doesn't have scaly face mite. He did have mites when he was very young. This poor creature has made many trips to the avian vet. He does still have crusty patches on his head. We haven't been able to clear them. He did also have huge bald patches on his head and neck, which very slowly have regrown.

What?! Do you think I am crazy.... I would not let a sick budgie near my own.

Never crazy!!! But know there are some members that do - so if I offended you I do apologize that is never my intent.

I am only concerned because that 2nd picture of his cere does not look normal. Is it my eyes? I know everyone else made a commet. Can you get a better picture of his cere?

What has the bird vet said about the baldness and the cere condition?

Certainly wasn't offended. I should have mentioned his face before I gave you all a fright. He has the same type of crusting above his right eye as well as above the cere.

He was treated several times with ivermectin. As for the feathers, he has no sign of any baterial or other feather disease. His regrowth may have been affected by the treatments he was having (for mites) during his first molt. He also suffered a respiritory disease during the same time which was treated with aureomycin in his water for about a week.

It appears that he will eventually regain his feathers, but the flight feathers are taking a lot longer, despite increased protein in his diet. He just didn't have a very good start in life

Feathers, can I ask you which vet you take you bird to? I think there's only two, may be three avian vet in Perth, and the best one of all is the one is Wattlegrove vet. Dr Tim Oldfield. He's great.

Just out of curiousity, can I see a close up of his face, just wanna see the crust bit you mentioned.

(and that's why they say curiousity kills the cat... i'm just so curious... :rip:)

Oh man Cheeta you and Feathers can go to Bubbles together and sneak budgies.

Feathers, as Cheeta requested love to see a close up if you don't mind :rip:

Yeah, I had figured that you were fairly close, and that Jules was somewhere quite south as she has been lurking around Kelmscott a bit :rip: As for sneaking Bubble's baby budgies, I believe you know where she lives... can you fit a wheelchair in your car? :)

:rip: No doubt someone will try to get the wheelchair in, if means getting some of Bubbles Budgies

I'n glad you where not upset with us, just sometimes there are poeple that don't realise this crustyness isn't normal.

I've heard of this vet from Bubbles so I now know the bird has been seen to by someone that knows what they are doing :)

I would love a close up too for the same reason as cheeta :rip:

I think I would be more upset if no one mentioned it... especially as I am a new member and you don't know me that well yet. I probably would have done the same. As for the vet, as Cheeta said, there are only a few in the metro area in Perth. South of the River there is also Murdoch uni that I know of.. but I'd be worried about students experimenting... :rip:

:P Lovely budgies, Adalard looks like a special budgie and hopefully the vet can find out what is ailing him. Guess budgies are like people, they get cancer, have strokes and unfortunately, weird medical conditions that can't really be diagnosed for certain. ;)
