Posted November 21, 200618 yr One of my female budgies who is trying to mate has just got a bum full of dark green poo. Have seperated her from every one else but I am scared that it will spread to other birds in the aviary and I have babies in there.Anyone have any ideas.Have fed her antibiotic food.Should I try and worm her aswell.
November 21, 200618 yr Perhaps she has been mating and is in the process of producing eggs.... this would explain the large abnormal droppings. Just a thought
November 21, 200618 yr I would take her to an avian vet we can all guess but green poo is not normal unless she was eating a whole lot of greens recently. Plus giving them medication they may not need is not good and can be more harmful. There is good bacteria also that harbors in all our stomachs and when that is killed by antibiotics more issues can occur. Ring your bird vet and keep us updated.
November 21, 200618 yr Hi As Lovey said, you need to take her to a vet to check this out. As she indicated, "giving them medication they may not need is not good and can be more harmful." We shouldn't play doctor when we don't know what's wrong. Only an avian veterinarian is qualified to make a diagnosis and prescribe the correct medication. Lovey also has a point about the "good" bacteria (flora) within the stomach which will be killed off by antibiotics. And everyone knows these days that giving antibiotics without there being a valid reason, just makes bacteria all the stronger.
November 21, 200618 yr Green droppings are actually normal if the bird is on an all seed diet. It's bright, luminous green droppings that can be a sign of trouble. Also, it sounds like there was more of it than should be normal and/or that they were sticking to her vent? I would have her checked out as was mentioned just to be on the safe side. Those are signs of illness and shouldn't be overlooked. If you need help locating an avian vet, let us know.
November 21, 200618 yr Author Good news everybody!!!Woke up to find Snowflake(Budgie) with egg in cage and no green poo around her vent at all. Will keep her in haospital cage though as I fear if I put her back in aviary she will start up new fights. She has already done damage to my favorite grey female Rocky. Thankyou for all your advice, its great to hear from people with experience.Unfortunately the egg has a crack in it.Thanks again.Love your Blue budgie Paul, very beautiful.
